Asked whether this was a similar election plum, Fulton said 1992 was a solid date and would not change, no mater what party was in power at Queen's Park. 50 Years Ago.... The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority proposed recently to establish a scenic lookout on the crest of Dean's Hill, west of Garden Hill. The proposed site is on the hump of land between the old road, which wound around the north side of the hill, and the new road, which passes through the centre of the hill in a deep cut. Standing on the crest of the hill, as it is now, it is possible to see almost the entire Ganaraska Valley. To the north can be seen the hills near Pontypool, with Tower Hill and the other hills in a line to the east almost to Rice Lake, clearly visible. To the east, the hill overlooks the village of Garden Hill, about one half mile away, and the nearby park and pond managed by the Conservation Authority and in the distance the hills of Northumberland Forest in the Baltimore area mark the horizon. To the south almost all the lower Ganaraska Valley is visible, with Canton Church steeple, the telephone tower on Victoria Street in Port Hope, and a portion of the buildings in town standing out clearly, with the blue of Lake Ontario forming a backdrop to the panoramic view. (Editor's note: Located on Regional Road 9, east of Kendal, the scenic lookout is called Richardson's Lookout. The views remain spectacular.) 75 Years Ago... On Thursday afternoon of last week during the thunder storm and rain that swept over the parched village George Layton along with two other employees, Harry Layton and a great opportunity for them. "Growing up I wasn't really good at much so when I saw the strongman competitions it became clear to me. I'm not good at much and I can lift a lot of heavy things... why not give this a try," Sztajdocher stated. He went on to say that he never really took heavy lifting serious until a gym trainer gave him direction. "I was just a kid who likes to work out and when a trainer saw me he gave me the opportunity to compete. I hope that I can give kids from around the Durham area that spark my trainer gave me. "We have three different competitions at the Orono fair this year, the dead-weight, the heavy ball lift and the sled pull, and we are asking people to come and try them out. The bolt then played around the wheels and behind the car, then it struck a cedar tree which stood about eight feet high and smashed it to the ground. The bolt then buried itself in the ground, digging a goodsized hole about a foot deep. No one was hurt, but the three in the Layton car were slightly dazed and when they came to their senses quickly scampered to a safer place of refuge. Harry Millson was in his car about ten feet away from the Layton car and it was splashed with dirt and mud. Sztajdocher stated, "I really hope people enjoy our show. We welcome all challengers to this event. It doesn't matter if you're big or small, tall or short, old or young we want people to enjoy their time and we want to make sure people see what being a strongman is all about." Regional Councillor Willie Woo tried his hand at the dead weight competition and said, "It's a lot heavier than it looks." This year one of the drivers in the demolition derby will be given back to charity, Brandon Feeney of Orono said, "I wanted to give back this year, and for a donation of one dollar you can sign the car I'll be driving." Feeney said that he will be donating all the money that is raised to the Children's Makea-wish-foundation. "It's a great charity and I want to help them in any way possible." Also one of the main attractions for this year's Fair is the addition of the first ever live Country music band, Emerson Drive whose hits include, If you were my girl, Moments, and Fall into Me. Emerson Drive will be on stage on Friday Night starting at 8 p.m. This year's Orono Fair will begin on Thursday September 6th. Rob and Samantha, back row, and their children Matthew and Riley are living through a major house renovation this summer at their home at 161 Church St. What do you do when you need a bigger house but don't want to move? Rob and Samantha of 161 Church Street, Orono were faced with that dilemma and did the only thing they could do renovate. The couple tore down the small addition on the back of their house with a sunroom and a bathroom and will add a three story addition in its place giving them the added space they feel they will need to house the family of eight. Besides adding a bedroom in the addition, the couple plan to restore the front porch and put new siding on the home. "We looked at moving but didn't find what we had here Pro Painting "No Job Too Small" BOOK YOUR FALL PROJECTS NOW so we decided to make the best of this place," Samantha told the Orono Times last week. "Where are you going to find a lot like this, (the lot is 99 " x 175 ") with mature trees in a quite neighbourhood," she asked, "It's everything." Their plan is to modernize the home and still keep its historic charm. Since they began their renovation project a few a weeks ago, it seems like everybody in town has driven by slowly, Samantha says. The couple know the house is old but are unable to trace its history. If anyone has old photos of the home, they would love to see them. They hope to have the home closed in by Thanksgiving. · General Repairs · Reasonable Rates · Reliable Service ~ Senior Rates ~ Call 905-983-5761 Clifford Francis
