Brown Christopher@oronoweeklytimes.com The downtown of Newcastle will be active on Saturday October 6th, when the Annual Harvest Festival comes to town. O r g a n i z e r s are telling residents to expect more classic cars, more live music, and more fun for the whole family. Shirley Rogers one of the volunteers who is helping put on this year's festival, is leading the Pumpkin Olympics "The Pumpkin Olympics is kid's games, like sack racing, corn tossing, and an event with bird seed. We will be running two different heats, the primary ages, and the elementary ages." The Pumpkin Olympics will be held at the Memorial Park, just north of the Newcastle Library Branch. "This year's theme is `Hometown Harvest', which means we want to showcase what our village has to offer." Rogers stated. "We have tried to bring in a farmer's market this year with vendors from the area coming to showcase and sell their crops." "We approached numerous farmers to help out with the farmer's market feel of this years festival." Rogers says this year's goal was to make the festival "very family friendly. We want to get kids involved, so we will be at Memorial Park to enjoy the day with families from Newcastle and the surrounding area. "We will be having some of the fan favourites, like the classic cars, live music in front of the Newcastle Community Hall, and we will also be having the Running Maniacs back this year." Rogers stated. Rogers said that the organizing committee was a little worried about space because of the cars, "This year we have more cars than I think we've ever had, we began to worry about where everything was going to go, but in the end we found a great place for them. "I'm with the Pathfinders in Bowmanville and we are trying to raise money to help our group go to England next year. We will be selling cookies at Memorial Park," Rogers said. "Including the Pathfinders, we have lots of vendors inside the community hall and on the street. There is something for everyone. " As always the day's festivities set off with the annual Lions Club Dog Walk. Terri Graham, a Lions Member and former International Director for the Lions International said, " We have two walks this year, the first will be in town starting at the Community Hall, heads south on Church Street, then east on Robert HARVEST see page 3 Emily Buckley (L) shows Siobhan Ward of Newcastle how a weaving loom operates at the Gift of Art Culture Days exhibit on Sunday.
