Brown Christopher@oronoweeklytimes.com After two months of searching, the Durham Liberal Riding Association has found their candidate for the upcoming federal byelection. Grant Humes, the Liberal candidate in the 2011 federal general election, will once again fly the Liberal Red. Humes announced his candidacy at Zantes Restaurant in Bowmanville Monday morning, "When Minister Oda first stepped down, Ron Collis the President of the Durham Liberal Riding asked me to stand. I was hesitant at first, because it was a lot of commitment and time. The more I thought about it, I saw clearly it needed to be done." Collis was pleased with Humes announcement, "Mr. Humes was an amazing candidate in the 2011 election, and he will bring the experience and leadership to Durham that has been lacking in the past." "In the last couple of weeks, I've been quietly putting together a team, and I am pleased to announce we are prepared to run very hard and very fast." Humes said to the supporters at his launch. On why he is running again for the nomination, Humes stated, "People are worried about how this country is being run, we can send a message to the Harper Government by taking back this riding for the Liberals." Interim Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Bob Rae who was with Grant Hume said, "I'm glad to be here today, and I've been assured that the orange juice here hasn't cost us $16 a glass," In reference to former Member of Parliament Bev Oda's orange juice expenses fiasco. Rae spoke to the crowd about the upcoming by-election in Durham, "People have a choice; by-elections are a chance to remind people of the reality of life, and gives politicians the opportunity to listen to people when they cast their ballot." Rae stated that Durham was important, "I've asked my fellow colleagues to come and visit the riding as well. I'll be back on numerous visits. We'll have a couple of by-elections in the upcoming months in Ontario and across the country." Currently there are three vacant seats and the result from the 2011 federal campaign in Etobicoke Center is being argued in front of the Supreme Court of Canada. "I believe that the people of Durham were not served well by the previous incumbent." Rae said of former Minister of International Cooperation Bev Oda. The people of Durham have the opportunity to send a clear message to Mr. Harper." Rae said Asked if the Liberals were at a disadvantage because of the leadership race scheduled for the middle of April, Rae didn't see Are you in an abusive relationship? Call that as a problem, "I think people understand the party is going through a renewal and the Liberals are stronger because of that. We have seen an increase in support since our last AGM, with a leadership race, I'm expecting to see an increase in supporters and members" Rae stated "Electing Mr. Humes will give the accountability that this riding was lacking under the previous incumbent." Rae told The Times. Humes will be facing off against Erin O'Toole of the Conservatives; no other party has announced any candidate at time of press.
