8 - Orono Weekly Times 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, October 3, 2012 Newcastle residents bring home the hardware Throughout this year 60,000 Canadians will receive Diamond Jubilee medals marking Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's 60th year on the throne. A branch of the Governor General's office, (the Chancellery of Honours), is administering the commemorative medal program which was created as a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. To be eligible for a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal a person must have made a significant contribution to a region or community within Canada. On Monday night, Clarington council awarded Ann Marie Harley of Newcastle with a Jubilee Medal for her contribution to the arts community in Clarington. "Ann has become a champion and perhaps more importantly, a friend of the arts and those who create it," Councillor Wendy Partner stated in her introduction at Monday night's council meeting. Harley is the driving force behind "A Gift of Art" a not-for-profit organization that promotes the work of local artists and artisans in Clarington, according to Partner. On Wednesday September 19th Durham Regional Councillors honoured the late Edmund Richard Majer with a Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal. Majer who was a Newcastle resident, passed away on February 18th of this year at the age of 87. He was recognized for his efforts as a life member and past president of both the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178 and the Newcastle Lions Club. A veteran of the Second World War, Majer dedicated his time to speaking to children in Clarington schools each Remembrance Day. Majer's son, Gary accepted the medal from Regional Chair Roger Anderson on his father's behalf. On June 27, five days before former Durham MP Bev Oda announced her resignation; she joined with Durham MPP John O'Toole in awarding 28 Queen's Jubilee Medals in a ceremony held at Trinity United Church in Bowmanville. The pair held a similar ceremony the following day in Port Perry, presenting medals to 16 recipients in the northern part of the riding. Medal recipients at the Bowmanville ceremony were: Dan Carter, Eleanor Colwell, James Connell, LieutenantColonel John Conrad, Mary Ann Found, John Greenfield, Hannu Halminen, Harold Hammond, William Hine, Sid Ikeda, Kirk Kemp, Rose Kuipers, Rev. Frank Lockhart, Margaret Maskell, Erin O'Toole, Joan Randall, Elva Reid, Gail Rickard, Heather Rutherford, Marion Saunders, Jillian Smigielski, Alan Strike, Anna Strike, Charles Taws, Mary Taylor, William Tomlinson, George Van Dyk, Edmond Vanhaverbeke.
