The plan offers farmers the predictability, the bankability, and sustainable for cattle farmers that provided the good things that grow in Ontario." She said that Ontario beef has not been effected by the recent recall, "Only beef that was exported from the Alberta slaughterhouse has been recalled so far." McClung says that there are two levels of slaughter house in Ontario -"Federal Level slaughterhouses, that export beef to places around the world, and provincial level slaughterhouses that have provincial oversight." She added that, " At the Provincial slaughterhouses, inspectors have to be on site when cattle are being slaughtered." In Ontario there are 162 provincial slaughterhouses inspectors for the 132 slaugh- terhouses. "Meat Inspectors have the right to stop operations at any point when they see issues that are effecting the slaughterhouse," McClung stated. " There are numerous reason that provincial slaughterhouse can be stopped." She went on to say that, "Inspectors must focus on all aspects of the slaughterhouses, They must ensure that all food slaughters houses are clean and we don't have any issues like what has taken place in Alberta." "Cattlemen of Ontario have nothing to worry about, Ontario has the best inspection of slaughterhouses across Canada." McClung stated. "We trust that like when the Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (Mad Cow Disease) happened in 2005, Canadians rallied around the beef industry and helped them out." McClung says she hopes consumers can do the same this time. One of the over 150 free range cattle that are located at Cartwright Farms on Shiloh Road in Newtonville. Mary Ann Found of Found Farms, and Secretary of the Durham Ontario Cattleman Association says this recall is tricky. "We are in the early stages right now and this could go either way. Either the borders can be closed and effectively cripple our industry, or the Canadian Government can contain this problem to just Alberta." "The problem with what's happened in Alberta is that the slaughterhouse that shipped the beef that is being recalled does 40 percent of the slaughters in BEEF see page 9 RODEO Continued from front ner, cheering him on. "We support him because he loves it so much," Doris told the Orono Times on Tuesday morning. While she is not crazy about the potential for injury, Doris says she has more confidence now that her son has more experience, he knows what he is doing and has more control than he had earlier on in his career. "His body is in better shape now than when he started bull riding," she stated. Before Foster gets on any bull, he makes sure he is mentally prepared. He feels this is his strongest defense against injury. "I try not to get too wound up," Foster said. "I try and stay relaxed and try to give it everything I got every time I ride." A good ride is when the rider stays on the bull for eight seconds. They are also rated on a scale of one to 25 on how well the bull bucks, rider form, control and spurring. "You need good bulls to get good scores. The good ones get out there high in the air and change direction," Foster says, "You Photo supplied Steve Foster out of the gate at the Kingsville Fair in May of this year. don't want a bull that doesn't buck much, or you won't get a high score." Each bull is different, according to Foster. Even if they have a pattern, you never know what to expect when you get on them, he says, "They are never exactly the same." Rodeo bulls are very well cared for as all rodeo stock according to Foster, who says RODEO see page 9 ~ Happenings ~ www.oronoweeklytimes.com Friday, October 12th 2012 - Orono Bingo, Orono United Church 7.p.m Start Wednesday, October 17th 2012 - Oddfellow and RebekahCenter, 6:00 p.m, Tickets $15.00, Call Connie Hooey 905-983-5726.
