6 - Orono Weekly Times 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Wednesday, October 31, 2012 ELECTION Continued from page 5 for the riding. When asked about his position on a national Extended Producer Responsibility strategy O'Toole who says his home in Courtice is near the incinerator, told the Orono Times that this was more of a provincial matter. As a Regional Councillor and Chair of the Health and Social Services Department during the last term of office, O'Connor took a position in favour of the incinerator, a position he told the Orono Times last Tuesday will be disappointing to some people. According to O'Connor it was clear to him from the epidemiology reports that the incinerator posed no danger. Health studies coupled with the fact the Region's fallback position to the incinerator was the Brock Township landfill site led O'Connor to support the incinerator in Clarington. Voters in the riding can cast their ballot in the advanced polls at the Elections Canada office at 1414, Highway 2 in Courtice. Parish makes lasting gift by: Christopher W. Brown christopher@oronoweeklytimes.com On Friday November 23rd, people from Bowmanville to Port Hope will gather at the Newcastle Community Hall to support the Clarington East Food Bank. Janice Parish, Broker for Newcastle's Royal Services Real Estate, organizer of the 4th Annual Fundraiser and Dance says, "It's a way to give back." Proceeds of the night will go to support the Clarington East Food Bank, in Newcastle. During an interview, with the Orono Weekly Times, on Tuesday morning Parish spoke about why she likes to do events like this for the community. "I've been in that position before, where I've needed financial support and help, and I've had to go to the food bank in my lifetime." Parish says it is so important for us to understand that there are people out there that need our help. "The Food Bank is located next door to me, and has always been a big part of my life, I know that there is a lot of people in the area who need the food bank, and don't always use it," Parish stated. While Parish admits that the fundraiser night will be full of good times and good music, the night will be about the food bank, "Karen Briden [manger of the Clarington East Food Bank] will be there throughout the night, and volunteers from the Food Bank will be there talking to some of the guests." In the five years the community event has been held, Parish says that each year they have reached their goal and this year she doesn't plan on being any different, "At first we raised roughly Orono Weekly Times www.oronoweeklytimes.com editor@oronoweeklytimes.com $2,000, each year after our first we have tried to raise the previous years. We are hoping to raise $10,000 dollars and over 600 pounds in non-perishable food items." Last year, Parish said she raised just over $7,000 and just over 550 pounds of non perishable food items. Unlike previous years, where she has done most of the work, this year Parish has reached out to the community and asked for more donations, "Foodland in Newcastle is donating all the food, pop and ice for the night and in the mid-afternoon on the 23rd of November the Orono Pathfinders, will be hosting the light lunch -- serving sandwiches and light refreshments before the event." Some of the old favourites, that attendees like, will be coming back according to Parish. "We added a silent auction in our second year, and we will be having it back this year. Businesses from the area have donated items for the auction." Parish says that, "It's a real community event, last year we had over 50 donations for the silent auction, and we are on track to get the same amount." During the night, musi- cians from all over Durham will be playing Parish said, "For the bands, we wanted to keep the musicians local, The Stone Sparrows have a Newcastle connection, the Doosies are local to Durham, and Diane Williams is from Newtonville." "We wanted to keep the talent local, no offense to other fundraisers, but we wanted this to be a truly local event," adding, "We didn't want an Impersonator." She stated, "The musicians are doing this at a reduced cost." While this year Royal Service is donating the rental cost of the Community Hall, Parish hopes that next year will be different. "Moving forward into the New Year I hope the Municipality will help out a little more. Hopefully by donating the cost of the Community Hall Rental next year we can raise a little more for the food bank." "I really hope that people come out to this, and support the community and help support the food bank." Doors open for the Fourth Annual Community Fundraising and Dance for the Clarington East Food Bank at 8:00 p.m. and will run till 1:00 a.m. Donations always appreciated at the C l a r i ng t o n East Food Bank 905-987-1418
