"Murder Most Foul" and the accompanying buffet dinner held at the Orono Town Hall last Saturday evening could be termed none other than a `smashing hit'. It was comedy mixed with suspense and the plot, although involving a considerable number of local players, was a tightly kept secret, even to the point that most of the players were unaware of the identity of the victim or of the murderer. The plot was based around a real-life happening involving Kay Lycett who some months ago did successfully pass a test for his motorcycle licence. Having received his licence he was standing beside his motorbike when the bike toppled over falling on Kay's leg thus requiring the victim to hobble around on crutches. From this four women in downtown Orono, Ann Dreslinski, Lynda Taylor, Mary Ellen Cyr and Sylvia Parker devised the story and plot presented on Saturday night. 50 Years Ago.... Over the weekend members of the Oshawa Ski Club were out to the ski hill east of Kirby where preparations are underway for the coming winter season. Enthusiasm is mounting over the acquisition of new property to the east of the present slopes. On the property a new junior ski tow is to be put into operation this year. Much work has been done at the Oshawa Ski Club over the summer but most important has been the erection of a twelve foot ski tow on the club's new property. This undertaking directed by Ernie Gomme will be completed in time for the skiing season. It will enable those people to ski on hills which are exhilarating without being too challenging, while the rope itself, made of nylon, will be lighter, stronger and more durable than anything used in the past. It will not become saturated with water on warm days, as did the manilla rope, and is much less likely to mark a jacket or a sweater. At the Southern Ontario Ski Zone meeting, held in Oshawa Oct 13-14, the Oshawa club succeeded in obtaining permission to hold the Junior Four-Way Championships here. It is recognized as the biggest ski meet in Southern Ontario. 75 Years Ago... A great deal of damage was done in Orono on Halloween both Saturday and Monday. We wonder why children, usually the older ones, have the distorted idea that destruction is funny. Police from Bowmanville and Constable Moffatt were called Saturday evening when some of the older boys became out of control with their pranks. Considerable damage was done to Mr. Giddus Jones' property on Saturday evening. On Monday evening they returned and discharged one or two sticks of dynamite not far from Mr. Jones' buildings. It seems that something was placed over the charge and splinters fell at the feet of Mr. Jones. This might have had serious results, for had he gone toward the dynamite it might have blown him to pieces. The charge from the dynamite rocked the homes in the north end of the town. Police are working on the case.
