Wednesday, November 21, 2012 1937 - 2012 · Celebrating 75 Years Orono Weekly Times - 3 To the Editor: Larry O'Grinch LETTERS continued from page 2 Many were appalled at the Bowmanville Christmas parade to see that the NDP Larry O'Connor used the Christmas theme parade to march his representatives down the Bowmanville streets? Is there no end to what the Liberals and NDP will use or how low they will stoop to try and get Joe Public to see them??? There is NO PLACE in any Christmas parade for Politics and if they have to use Santa Claus and our proud Canadian Veterans to gather votes, how desperate are these two parties? I do hope that we shall never see any Christmas or any other Holy time event allowing the politicians to get on board...they sure did not get any cheers or anything at all from anyone one our corner or up the street from us. Many were asking what in the world was the reason to allow them in the parade in the first place and why? I am sure they will not win any extra votes from "butting" into a parade that is for children and the young of heart to enjoy!!! Cecile D. Bowers Tyrone Orono's Chili Cook-off Committee presented cheques to two local groups in support of community activities. Left to right: front row- Shelly Rivers, Annette Grey, Scott Storey, Flora Sharpe, Sharon McCartney, Lisa Roy. Back row Wendy Partner, Erica Chapman, Cathy Stewart, Cathy Graham and Nadine Phillips. A cheque for $450 was presented to the BIA in support of the Santa Claus Parade, and cheque for $2,800 was given to the Celebrate the Orono Park's 90th Anniversary Committee. CANDIDATES Continued from front help. "The fact we have GM in Oshawa is because the Prime Minister stepped in along with the U.S. President to provide a series of loans to the auto companies," O'Toole stated. Larry O'Connor, candidate for the NDP Party says the government has to make sure off-shore auto manufacturing companies make long term investments in this country and that we be allowed to access their markets. "The Province did as much as the federal government for the bail-out packages," stated Grant Humes, Liberal candidate. Humes claimed companies are leaving Canada for cheaper, less educated work forces. Michael Nicula blamed much of the industry's problems on a cumbersome payroll system and says the government has no business pro- ducing cars. Green candidate Virginia Ervin says lowering payroll and income taxes would help the manufacturing sector, as would a Fair Trade Agreement rather than the existing Free Trade Agreement. GM is struggling because they are not staying competitive, according to Ervin. "Free trade allows markets to become diluted with product shipped in from other countries, made by people not making a fair wage." Humes says incentives would help to keep the auto sector and its feeder industries strong and O'Connor says the government's high dollar policy is what has cost Durham its manufacturing jobs. "The NDP is the only one who has a policy to look at trying to create good manufacturing jobs right here in Durham," O'Connor stated. O'Toole claimed there is no high dollar policy but rather a low inflation policy, which "actually helps low income families and seniors," he stated. On the heels of the government economic update released by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty the day before the debate, the question was asked how each candidate would balance the budget in light of the fact the federal deficit is $7 billion higher than expected. O'Toole said he supported Flaherty's plan of extending the time to get back into a balanced budget position by one year. "We don't need to raise taxes like the NDP would," O'Toole stated. "This government has been giving corporations large tax cuts and increasing taxes on the average Canadians," O'Connor stated. The wasteful spending and billions of dollars in cost overruns in the fighter jet program is a good example of this government's wasteful spending according to O'Connor.
