f THE EDITOR TALKS We have often noticed the disrespect shown by audiences during the singing ,01 God Save the King in assemblies so - we are glad to read that Belleville citizens are more respectful and decorous. The Daily Ontario in publishing a report of Miss Jessie B. Tuite's recital Friday evening evening when the City Hall was packed,. says : "Noticeable was the-.spirit of patriotism manifested when the National Anthem was being played. All stood and there was no rush for the doors until the last chord had died away." It does look so much more becoming for an audience to stand still or to join in the National Anthem Anthem than to begin putting on wraps and moving abolit making a noise or beginning beginning to talk. It only occupies one.minute and everybody might stand- still that length of time. KIRKFIELD Some Facts About the Firthplace of Sir William and Lady McKenzie. In reading THE STATESMAN from week to week I do not remember ever noticing the name of this village. If you have never visited Kirkfield all I can say is you have something to live for yet. Bow- manville is all right--I'll never go back on old Bowmanville--but Kirkfield--well, its different 1 But you must see it for yourself, "Where is Kirkfield ?" did you ask ? Well, now, what next ? Take your map, start at Bowmanville, run your pencil pencil back the Scugog road to Caesarea, across the lake to Port Hoover, on thru Mariposa to Oakwood, jog a little to the east (keep away from Lindsay, no Local Option there!) straight north for twenty miles and here you are at Kirkfield, right in line with Bowmanville only some fifty miles nearer the North Pole, and approximately approximately 1000 feet nearer heaven. You have heard of the T. V. Canal, well here it is--at least an important part of it. Just north of the village about a mile is the lift lock, the mate of the one at Peterboro in size, but with less cement work and more steel work (not steal) . in its construction, both useful in lifting boats and votes when necessary. Nevertheless, Nevertheless, the lift lock is a great piece . of work and well worth going a few miles out of one's way to see, even tho it is never likely to pay 2°/ 0 on the money it represents, before the millenium comes. Besides all that, this is in the riding of The Minister of Militia. Col. the Hon. Sam is our member, which fact constitutes another another tie to Bowmanville, for there he got what was even better by a good deal than a seat in Parliament or even a place in said to be the finest of its kind in the country. The roads- are excellent for motoring and elegant cars from far and near, many of which no doubt represent an elegant mortgage at 8 °/ 3 or more on a fine home somewhere, honk ! honk! thru our streets at all hours of the day and night. There are some good farms in the neighborhood, south and west, but the main business to the north and east is the raising of cattle on the extensive ranches which are more suitable for that purpose than for general farming. Great numbers of cattle and hogs are shipped here. On the banks of the canal about a mile away is a great stone crusher which breaks up the stones taken from the canal into material for road-making." Train-loads of this broken stone leave here every day for Toronto and other points. - • But I have spun this out twice as long as I had intended,' and I must hasten to close with best wishes to yourself and The Statesman which we appreciate very much, indeed. H. J. Hoidge. * Thoughts for business men and others. The James Papers practically cover the area from which Bowmanville business men draw customers. Since August 190° --five years ago--when The Bowmanville News was bought there has not been a week when less than Three Thousand One Hundred and Sixty complete papers have been published and often more than this number. No local weeklv. newspaper between between Toronto and Belleville has as large circulation as THE STATESMAN and only few as large as The Bowmanville News, so that advertisers in this town and out of it have a business luxury that few towns possess so fully--two local papers that reach nearly all the homes in town and surrounding country. This condition is worth very much to Bowmanville merchants. merchants. "Fruit-a-tives" Completely Restored New Brunswick Merchant To Health. LOCAL AND OTHERWISE. eiee.-alva Phillips Bristol. NT B.. Well, if Kirkfield has no claim on "Dan" it has a big one on his partner, for this is not only the natal spot of Sir William, but also of his estimable wife, and despite the fact that they have a fine residence in Toronto, they consider this little place "Home, Sweet "Home", and are spending time and money without stint to make this an ideal spot. During the summer mortfhs many week-end visitors visitors from Toronto and other places are to be seen at the "Inn" which Lady Mac- Kenzie has had erected here and wh ch is Drunkards will tell you with tears of sincerity that they do not want to drink. The craving coming from the inflamed membranes of the stomach drives them to it. Alcura will soothe the trembling nerves and remove the craving that is ruining vour home and stealing an otherwise kind husband or father from you. It costs only $1.00 per box and if it does not cure or benefit after a trial the money will be refunded. Alcura No. I, is tasteless and can be given secretly in tea, coffee or food. Jury & Lovell,Druggists, Lovell,Druggists, Bowmanville. The local newspaper is the very best advertising medium for local business men. Just think of the way it works out. Try. to realize if you can what powerful selling agents The James Papers are with their appeals in some thirty-five hundred h mucs every week. The merchant writes o it his advt. and James Publishing House d ies the rest. • Can you realize what an^ e lonomical selling-staff Bowmanville x m -rchants have in T E STATESMAN and T.ie Bowmanville News} Our efficient staff is at the s.rvice of every advertiser and all that is necessauK for Mr. Merchant to do is to write a truthful message clearly clearly and convincingly and our skilled compositors compositors will put it in attractive type and ..the postal service\will speedily deliver it to be read bÿ'"-frpm fifteen to twenty thousand readers, allowing five to a home. Again we repeat, advertising properly done and inserted in The James Papers pays excellent dividends. „ In fact it is simply useless to try to do business in Bowmanville without advertising. up all hope and when the doctors had failed to do anything more for me. I had a stroke of Paralysis in March, 1910, and this left me unable to walk or help myself, and the Constipation of the bowels was terrible. Nothing did me - any good and I was wretched in every way. Finally, I took "Fruit-a-tives" for the Constipation, and it not only cured me of that trouble but gradually this fruit medicine toned up the nerves and actually cured the paralysis. Farmers are marketing the year's crops and as the yield has been good and prices are alike good money will soon be plentiful. plentiful. Western provinces have had a bumper bumper harvest--we read of 200,000,000 bushels of wheat. When they sell the money finds its way east and we all expect to get some of it. Ontario farmers have had a good year, too, and money will soon be flowing freely into trade channels. Winter Winter clothing and other necessities must be bought and every line of business in towns and villages will receive its share. There is an important lesson in this thought for all our local merchants and tradesmen. People expect every business that is worth patronage to be advertised for they know all up-to-date merchants do advertise. Take a glance over The James Papers and you will see that our successful businesses in Bowmanville are all liberally advertised--Messrs Couch, Tohnston & Cryderman, McMurtry Co., S. W. Mason & Son, The Anderson Clothing Co., Levi Morris & Son, F.A.Haddy, C.H. Haddy, Snowden & Painton, Grand Cen tral, Jury & Lovell, R. M. Mitchell & Co., C. M. Cawker & Son, E. W. Loscombe, W. T. German Statistics Show 546 in 1,000 Reach Âge of 50. \X Lif© is longer" in the German cities than in the small towns. -This is the discovery announced by the German Statistical Bureau, which has published figures showing that 546 persons in each 1,000 in cities of more than 100,000 inhabitants reach the age of 50, compared with 539 reaching the same age in cities of between 20,000 and 100,000, and 544 in towns of fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. These figures pay a remarkable tribute to German efficiency, said Prof. A. Frankel, director of the Municipal Hospital of Berlin. We believe that speed in. the cities tends to shorten life, but it helps to cure other evils. We believe that one of the principal reasons for life being longer in cities is that medical medical attention is prompt and expert at the same time. In small towns there are fewer physicians and hospitals, hospitals, and often a patient dies when efficiency might have saved" his life. • Another great reason for longer life is the success of the recent campaign campaign aimed at saving babies in the large cities through giving free instruction instruction and assistance to mothers mothers in the care of infants and providing providing pure milk, free nurseries and supplies.
