This 1940 T-Bucket Ford with Diane Schut of Cameron behind the wheel attracted considerable attention and was an award winner. There is always someone who likes to march to the sound of a different drummer, in this case the sound comes from a different engine. The Subaru GL has a horizontally horizontally opposed four-cylinder, four-cylinder, aluminum alloy engine that produces surprising torque at a relatively low rpm. The Subaru engineers have followed several different drums in their design of their product. The Subaru concept seems to be, it doesn't matter how anyone else is building them, let's start from scratch and do it right. The steering wheel and dashboard layout are probably probably the most apparant items that show you something different different is going on. Some new cars do have an inverted V attaching the steering wheel to the column, providing a clear view of the dash. The Subaru has gone one step further further and provided thumb rest to increase the amount of grip on the wheel. Two odd-looking knobs sprouting from the dash and steering column provide the control for the lights and wipers. With a bit of practice, it was easy to operate them while still maintaining a grip on the wheel. As mentioned earlier, the 1800 cc engine has horizontally opposed cylinders. This means that the engine is relatively relatively flat, the pistons travel sideways rather than the con ventional up-and-down motion most people are familiar with. Since the pistons can move in opposite directions they cancel out any engine vibration vibration that might be produced. During idling and cruising the car makes about as much noise as an electric watch. Admittedly during acceleration acceleration it does sound more like a diesel watch. A flat engine means a low centre of gravity which results in excellent road handling when combined with front wheel drive. Peak horse power is produced at only 4400 rpm. With such a low engine speed the wear and tear on vital components should provide provide an age expectancy approaching approaching that of Methusala. The car tends to feel heavy when manouevering around the parking lot or squeezing into those rare downtown parking spots that have been known to pop up at a moment's notice. Driving the car at faster speeds is really quite enjoyable. The GL responds responds quickly to the driver's directions. A combination of the tilt steering wheel and the easily-tuned bucket seat with lumbar support provide the driver with complete comfort. Listening to the four-speaker stereo is a pleasure since the car interior is so quiet you can hear the syncro whine from the transmission. The car does seem to get noisy during acceleration acceleration but this is because normal cruising is so quiet. As another example of from- the-ground-up engineering the Subaru family has what is called a 'hill holder' clutch. This device prevents the car' from rolling backwards on a hill. It is a great idea for the unco-ordinated portion of the population that swear they will never drive a standard transmission because of their deathly fear of rolling back down the street. When the car is stopped on an incline a special circuit is activated. With the clutch in and pressure applied to the brake, the brakes are locked on. You can now take your foot off the brake without any fear of slipping and apply gas to the engine. As the clutch is released the brakes are disengaged disengaged and the car moves forward forward with practised precision. The Subaru is not just a patchwork of ideas but a thoroughly thought-out blueprint blueprint that has evolved into a complete engineering concept. concept. Twist and shout. Move it all about.
