Taxes to Rise By Less Than 5% Says Region Tax levies in the Durham Region will rise by no more than five per cent each year, according to predictions from the Durham Region's finance department. In a report to regional council last week, Finance Commissioner Jack Gartley estimated that the current budget will not rise by more than five per cent annually ■ during the next five years. The commissioner noted, however, that Durham's tax rate will depend on a number of factors such as population growth, interest rates, and inflation. Expenditure projections from the finance department department were included in last week's agenda of Durham's regional council for Infor- . • mation. The commissioner is forecasting forecasting a net increase in the tax levy of 4.9 per cent in 1984. By Peter Parrott Talks will be held between the Town of Newcastle and the Durham Region before any decision is made on the building building of temporary sludge storage lagoons on rural property property in the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle. Newcastle's town council decided on this course of action after Planning Director Terry Edwards introduced a report on the planned construction construction of two sludge storage lagoons in the municipality. They are to be built north of Taunton Road, and are needed .as a result of the Durham Region's decision to hire a private contractor for the removal of sludge from regionally-owned sewage treatment plants. Sludge from regional sewage plants is normally spread immediately on farm fields, but the temporary lagoons are needed to store it when the trucks used in this operation cannot get on the fields. In a report, the director of planning noted that the storage areas should be subject subject to rezoning requirements and input from the public and municipal government departments. departments. He said, however, that if the sludge storage areas are considered considered as an accessory to a public utility they would be allowed by current by-laws. Councillor Marie Hubbard asked that the report of the planning director be withdrawn withdrawn and that talks be held between the Durham Region and the Town of Newcastle. "I think there are some , issues that the municipality needs to discuss at the regional regional level," said Councillor Hubbard. She added that her suggestion was not intended to be a delaying effort. Town council agreed to withdraw the planning director's director's report, pending further meetings with the town and the Durham Region. il.; Qyjlity pMl AND FAIR PRICE QO* HAND IN HANQ.THISIS THE CODE OF ETHICS ON WHICH THEY STAND the BTC (Bowmanville Tennis Club)! TENNIS TALK There is no doubt, this has been the best summer in years, as far as the weather is concerned. Bowmanville Tennis Club members wasted no time in getting out on their newly resurfaced courts. The pebblestone surface added a slippery new dimension to the game. Alas, many a player watched in dismay as a ball went by him or her simply because they could not do an about face quick enough. Cheer up though fellow tennis players, this surface is a necessary intermediate step to a vinyl surface yet to come. Only problem is, the final surface can't be done for another another year and a half, in order to give the new courts time to settle and harden properly. Any members who were present at the last social night saw two senior members receive receive Honourable memberships memberships from Club President Don Bradley. The two ladies Lillian Dippell and Marion James were very grateful to receive such an honour, and a letter of appreciation was received by the club a few days later thanking them for their consideration. If one goes at the right time to the courts behind the Lions Centre, you can still catch these 'young' ladies enjoying a game of tennis. It's nice to know that age is not a major factor in enjoying this sport. Another social night is coming up on Thursday, Aug. 4. These nights which the club tries to hold once a month, provide an excellent opportunity opportunity for members to meet and get to know some of the local people in their community, or renew an old aquaintance. New members especially should try and take advantage of this chance to socialize, play a little tennis, and make some new friends, It's a casual evening and refreshments refreshments will be provided by the club.
