July 24,1983. Dear John: The July 20 article in the Independent entitled "Parents must be informed about school closures" contains a number of inaccuracies that I feel obligated to correct. My displeasure at the report being dumped on me at the Board meeting is not directed against the Property and Finance Committee so much as it is against Administration. Administration. The commitment to review review the study of the Western Area with the Trustees of the area was not given by the Property and Finance Committee but rather Administration. Administration. This was not done. In fact the study was not made available at the Board Meeting. I received a copy, after requesting it, on Friday, July 22 - a week after the meeting. The second item in the article which concerns me is the statement "Trustee Willsher said an obsession with secrecy was the root of many of the board's problems." problems." This statement was not made by me and is very unfair to the Trustees who serve on the board, What I did say was that it is critical that the board communicate with ratepayers. I maintained the board must make information available to them and ensure they understand the rationale rationale behind our decision. Yes, we have found ourselves in difficulties when we did a poor job of documenting the background background leading up to major decision items. This was the very essence of the concern Western area trustees had with regard to the problem of school closings. It is an important matter to Trustees and parents alike. By having a review with area Trustees before it went to the board a better decision could have resulted. School closures and restructuring are difficult items to deal with. It is my opinion that an "extra step" in the procedure is warranted. I nave expressed these concerns concerns before (as have other Western area Trustees) and shall continue to do so. Both Trustees and rate payers have a right to expect careful consideration consideration of such very critical matters. Very truly yours R. L. Willsher, Trustee Ward III N.-N. Board of Education.
