Last year, Bell operators stopped accepting third number calls billed from coin telephones. On April 15 of this year, on all third number long distance calls from coin telephones operators began attempting to contact the billed party to confirm that the person placing the call was known and that the charge was acceptable. However, if verification was not possible because the line was busy or there was no answer, the call was still put through. Starting October 17, all such numbers will have to be verified before the call is connected. If there is no answer or a busy signal at the billing number, the person person placing the call will have the option of paying by coin, calling collect or using a long distance Calling Card, or calling another time. Murray Makin, Bell's vice-president of customer services said the October 17 date was chosen to allow customers who regularly make third number calls from coin telephones to obtain obtain Calling Cards. "Calling Cards will allow customers to charge long distance calls at regular operator-assisted rates," Makin said. Calling Cards arc available available to qualified business or residence users at no charge and can be obtained by completing the application application form that will be enclosed enclosed with their August telephone bills, BUSINESS DIRECTORY Y elverton and District News (Intended for Last Week) A broad variety of events vied for the interest of local residents on Saturday. Janet- ville United Church was the scene of a lovely wedding on Saturday, p.m., when Miss Ollie Sopoci and Mr. Mark Palhenmen were united in marriage by Mr Denis Fran- sky and Rev. Bruce Harrison of Cannington. Following the wedding, the reception and dinner and dance was held at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sopoci who live on the 10th line of Manvers, east of the Cartwright - Manvers Boundary. A large tent was set up for the festivities - a combination of Canadian and Czechoslavakian cuisine was provided for the 125 guests present. Howard and Eileen Malcolm were present on the auspicious occasion. Also on Saturday evening, Clare and Laurie Robinson held their annual Pork B.Q. at the resident, cast of Yelvcrton with some 50 guests in attendance. Congratulations are extended to Laverne and Nadine Wright of Janetville who were honored by friends and relatives on the occasion of their Silver Wedding Anniversary also on Saturday evening. The Victorian County Pork Producers annual B.B.Q. of pork chops, ribs and sausage was also well represented from our area among the near 1,000 guests in attendance. The oppressive heat and humidity was the only distraction distraction to mar an otherwise pleasant pleasant evening. Possibly guests from the greatest distance were Mr. and Mrs. Don Farrell (Don is a brother of the current Ontario Pork Producers Chairman Doug Farrell) and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Bakker of Foxboro and Picton area respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Malcolm recently attended the York County Pork Producers Producers B.B.Q. - home of the well known Eric Aldcrson. The Art Rowans were recent visitors to Picton. Master Kendall Baker spent a portion of this week with the Rowans, returning home on Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Baker. Mrs. Denis Fransky returned from a month's holidays with his wife and boys at Golden Lake (not to be confused with the "Golden Pond") and at a United Church camp on Lake Huron, full of vim and vigour and chuck full of renewed ambition and faith, for our Sunday church services. Regular services will be conducted at normal hours at all three Charges in weeks ahead. We made one of our regular forays to the "big city' r this week to hear Tina Turner at the Forum at Ontario Place - us and some several thousand others that is. She sure is chuck full of energy and a great entertainer. A gathering of one limb of the Malcolm clan was held on Sunday afternoon in the form of a picnic at the Murray Malcolm pond. They also observed the 2nd birthday of Kaily Bowen and an early observance of Murray's 39th(? ). Miss Mona Malcolm spent the week with friends at a cottage in Norland. Yelverton girls met at Yelverton vs. Bethany girls this week in the semi-final round of their playoffs. Bethany girls, we understand, has eliminated the Pontypool team earlier. Yelverton won the first game of a three out of five series. Gwen Gray's team after receiving a bye in the first round, will meet South Monaghan in the playoffs. Monaghan in the playoffs, also in a three out of five series. South Monaghan had earlier eliminated the Millbrook junior team by one run in extra innings. Lobb ball is taking on renewed interest in the township. Carl Finney's team is using our Yelverton ball diamond as its home game centre. Several other teams are also being fielded in the same competition. Currently we understand there is subversive action being taken to have Grandview Grandview School property accepted as a municipal centre for future ball grounds and to seek provincial grants to this end. Personally, we have no objection to this, providing, that this action does not deprive our Yelverton community of existing facilities. facilities. A site at Grandview C should compliment all.; existing ball fields in the, township as an alternative site for any - Yelverton included. ' ' Each team needs to have , a community identity for fati support and if you deprive--' them of this, you rob them of :■ one of the most essential components. Next thing we, , expect to hear is that they will be closing our Yelverton ; Church and holding services in one of Grandviews portables! •:,< POWDERED SAVE $1.60 CLOVERLEAF SAVE .85 ABC q nn Sockeye ^ Detergent eibox^.Oy Salmon vu oz. tin 1. / Î7 MARY MILES COOKED PICNIC Smoked Pork Shoulders 2.62/* 1.19/ib PRODUCT OF ONTARIO CANADA NO. 1 GRADE Potatoes 2 ■ 49/3x6 qt.
