Heart Fund Over the Top At the close of its fiscal year, the Canadian Heart Fund, Ontario Division, has reached its $8.45 million annual campaign objective. The 1983 campaign which was conducted during February in Ontario exceeded its goal by $28,611. Door-to-door canvassing, canvassing, special events, corporate solicitations, the sale of 'Roses for Research', and In Memoriam donations; all contributed contributed to the final total of $8,478,611. Bequests and other sources of income combined with campaign receipts will allow the Ontario Heart Foundation to allocate $11,200,000 to heart disease and stroke research in Ontario, for the 1983-84 granting granting period. In presenting his report, Alex D. Broomfield, the 1983 Canadian Heart Fund Chairman Chairman said, "The residents in the Province of Ontario can be proud of their substantial contributions contributions to the crusade against heart disease and stroke. Evidence to date, that research has paid off, is in the fact that the overall death rate from heart and blood vessel diseases, for people under 65 years of age, is, down 27 percent' percent' since 1953. Marked reductions reductions have been achieved in deaths due to stroke. In heart attack, the single leading cause of death in Canada, the decline has only been 11 percent. percent. He continued by saying that the residents of Ontario have endorsed the work of the Ontario Heart Foundation, through their continuous support support over the years and that vital medical research in the area of heart disease and stroke will continue to receive the financial support of the Foundation. In conclusion and on behalf of the Canadian Heart Fund, Ontario Division, Mr. Broomfield expressed "heartfelt" "heartfelt" thanks to the thousands of volunteer workers and canvassers canvassers in the Province, for their tremendous support of the 1983 Campaign. It's almost time for all those teachers, all those books Faced with an increase in family service referrals of over 22 percent, a staggering 38 percent jump in admissions of children to care, and a doubling of sexual abuse referrals, referrals, the Children's Aid Society of Durham Region is proceeding immediately with the hiring of six additional staff, agency Director Bob Penny announced today. Penny noted that the C.A.S. is required under Provincial legislation to respond to any and all situations where children children are felt to be in need .of protection. Not only must we respond, our response must be in accordance with standards and guidelines dèfined by government, Penny* emphasized. emphasized. Because of increased service demands, explained the Director, the agency's ability to comply with its legal obligations was jeopardized. Board approval of additional staff positions was directed to bringing the C.A.S. back into a position of compliance with government regulations, Penny stated. The action was taken without without government approval, Penny went on to say, but it is rrëïTfïgül CLEAN AS A WHISTLE AS SUCK AS A PIN. , IS WHAT FOLKS SAYJ mo HAVE OUR OIL IN) Mills Bros. The government has no option, he added, since it is the government which made the rules we are now attempting to follow. The six new staff will be hired on contracts to the end of December, 1983, ahd their continuing need will be evaluated at that time, Penny concluded. In answer to questions regarding regarding the likely cause of increased referrals to the C.A.S., Penny pointed to the delayed impact of the recent recession as one important factor. There are others, he warned, and these have to do with the fact that Durham Region has been and remains under-serviced from a child welfare standpoint. Based on experience across the province province we can to some extent predict the incidence of child protection cases in Durham, Penny explained. Given the present Durham population we should anticipate protection protection caseloads approaching 800. At the moment and even with recent increases, caseloads caseloads are at less than half that number, he noted. Our recent experience in placing a worker in the northern area of Durham Region reveals that serious protection cases exist and will come to light as the visibility and accessibility of the C.A.S. increase. He noted that in a matter of months the northern caseload increased from less than five to more than 30 once a worker was permanently assigned to the area. The C.A.S. mandate includes includes the provision of preventative preventative services, Penny concluded, concluded, and the agency believes such services can most effectively effectively be developed through the establishment of local services services offices capable of responding responding not only to Oshawa- Whitby needs but to those of Ajax-Pickering, Newcastle, and the north of the Region. These areas have traditionally ; been shortchanged in terms of child welfare services, Penny Argued, and it is likely that until this situation is rectified child welfare service demands and related costs will continue to rise notwithstanding the state of the economy; of SCHOOL SUPPLIES Excellent quality and price.
