OMAF OFFICE HOURS Beginning September 1, the Bowmanville Office of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Agriculture and Food will have the following hours - 8:15 a.m. to 12:00 noon --1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. MANURE ANALYSIS SERVICE AVAILABLE Farmers applying livestock manure to their fields can now learn exactly what nutrients they are adding to the soil by having manure samples analyzed. The program is designed to help farmers make more efficient use of fertilizer and save money at the same time. Livestock manure is an excellent source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and organic matter. Many farmers, however, do not know what value there is and, consequently consequently when soil testing, they give no credit for manure being applied to their fields. This could be costly and in cases where manure has been applied heavily for a period of years, we can get into excessive levels of phosphate and potassium and yet commercial fertilizer is still being applied. As a livestock producer, you already have to handle manure. If it is not used in proper combination with fertilizer, the farmer is missing one of the major advantages of combining livestock and crop production. production. Manure sample kits are available at $1.50 each from the Agricultural Office. The cost of analyzing the sample is $17. If you would like to know more about what you are applying to your soil, why not consider having your livestock manure analyzed this fall.
