( ( i BOWMANVILLE HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT GARYMILOVICK 623-4416 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 31,1983 Section Two The Tennis Racquet By Jeff Cookson The Bowmanville Tennis Club held its Club Championship Championship Finals this past weekend. Once again it was club president president Don Bradley who came away with most of the honours, winning the Men's Singles, Men's Doubles and the Mixed Doubles' crowns. Bradley had little trouble in the singles final as he bested Rick Bain in straight sets 6 -1, 6-3. However, he was severely severely tested in the semis where Jim Stackaruk took the champion to a third set and had two match points before bowing as Bradley won 6-4,2 - 6, 8 - 6. The match between Bradley and Stackaruk lasted three hours and was by far the most exciting of this year's championships. In the Men's Doubles, Bradley combined with his usual partner Mike Roberts to down Roger Wood and yours truly 6 - 2, 3 - 6, 6-1. The win must have been extra satisfying satisfying considering the fact that Bradley and Roberts had lost in the finals of the Lapolo Tournament earlier this summer. Don also combined with wife Janet to win the Mixed Doubles title over Denise Moorcraft and Mark Starkey. The match featured a number of spirited volley exchanges between the four players. Several times it was Don Bradley vs Denise Moorcraft, head to head and although Don generally bested her, Denise showed why many have rated her one of the most improved ladies in the club. Janet Bradley was certainly no slouch either as she consistently consistently rushed the net and made two very crucial net put aways in the third set. The ladies' single title went to Carol Hooper with her 6 - 0, 6 - 2 win over Caroline Char- man. As with Don Bradley, Hooper's toughest match was in the semi-finals where Janet Bradley had her down by a set and a 5 - 1 lead before she rallied to win 4 - 6, 7 - 5, 6 - 2. This match was another 2 >/ 2 hour marathon featuring some fine play by both competitors. competitors. In the ladies' doubles finals, Janet Bradley and Nancy Gilchrist teamed up to win in three sets over Jean Deblois and Dorothy Kelly. This match featured a tie-breaker in set two which, had Deblois and Kelly won would have given them the match. Scores were 4 -'6, 7 - 6 (7 - 1), 6 - 3. Once again this match was over two hours in length and featured several long tough rallies. i Pigeon Racing Results On Saturday, Aùgust 13, the Bowmanville Invitational Racing Pigeon Club flew their Young Bird race from Kingston, Kingston, Ontario.
