They played there on Saturday and lost 8- 5 and returned here Sunday afternoon at Soper Creek Park. It was a close contest, with several arguments along the way, but the Bowmanville squad ended up on the short end of a 7-5 score to put them out of contention. John Mutton on the mound for Bowmanville pitched a good game, but the local team needed a few good breaks to win. /Legion Picnic Results years of age and under - mixed - one boy and one girl - one couple as winners - girl - Angie Paeden, boy - Craig Paeden. 3 Legged Race -17 years of age and over - mixed - no relatives (meaning, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, also no girl friend and boy friend) - One couple winners - lady Vicki Stephen, man - Wayne Paeden. There was a full draw for the men's doubles tournament last Wednesday at Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club with the winners from Lindsay winning the Les Langs trophy for the third time. They are pictured here, 1-r, Syd Elsdon and Bill Tewkesbury, receiving the award from Mr. Langs, with club President Peter Bathgate at right. The past two weeks were quite a busy time for Bowmanville Bowmanville Lawn Bowlers. On-Sun. Aug. 21, Port Hope paid a return visit to our club for a fun day of Zitney bowling. We do not have the final score cards but understand that first prize was won by Marj Wakely (Port Hope) and Marg Perris and Marg Nicks of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, followed by Mabel Mavin (Bow.), Millie Clayton (Port Hope) and Wanda Ball (Bow.). A lovely social hour followed the bowling and everyone enjoyed enjoyed the good fellowship which has ensued between these two clubs. Our last Club tournament of the season took place on Wed. Aug. 24th with teams from Bow., Oshawa, Whitby, Lindsay, Lindsay, Port Hope, Cobourg, Highland Creek and Agin- court. The first round saw Oke and Mavin (Bow.) lose to Knibb of Whitby 10 - 12, Coombes and Lang lost to Morrison of Oshawa 8 -15, Hall and Bathgate Bathgate won over Garrett of Whitby 24 - 6, Brock and Carson beat MacDonald of Highland Creek 16 - 12 while Hughes and Bennett lost to Roulston of Agincourt 22 - 9. Second games were Coombes 9 -13, Hall lost 6 -18, Brock won 11 - 9, Oke won 18 - 7, Hughes won 15 -10. In the final game, Coombes lost 11 - 14, Hall won 16 - 9, Brock lost 21 - 4, Oke won 20 - 7 and Hughes lost 5 - 14, The eventual winners were Syd Elsdon and Bill Tewkesbury of Lindsay with a score of 55 plus 2. Second prize went to Art Cartwright and Alex Hamill of Whitby who scored 53 points. Third spot was taken by Bob Roulston and Charlie Reck of Agincourt with 52 plus 1 while 4th prize was won by Clarence Oke and Ab Mavin (Bow.) with 48 points. Fifth spot was won by Gord Terwillegar and Tim Nelson of Oshawa with 40 while the last prize was won by Carl MacDonald and Roy Chapman of Highland Creek with 35. The trophy was presented by the donor Les Langs and it was indeed a pleasure to see our oldest ana at the present time only Life Member out on the greens again. It is interesting to note that this is the fourth year for this trophy and Elsdon and Tewkesbury have won it three times out of the four. A special thanks to those ladies who worked in the kitchen, supplied sandwiches and carried drinks out to the greens and to Norma Brock for pouring tea for the visitors at noon. Among the ladies present were Marg Perris, Thelma Bennett, Gwen Coombes and Mabel Mavin. On Thursday, Aug. 25, Rena Bathgate, Vi Coole and Marg Nicks took part in a tournament tournament in Oshawa and although they lost all three games by close margins, they enjoyed immensely the hospitality shown by the Oshawa club, They lost their first game by a margin of one point, had a very close second game and lost their last game on an extra end. Much to their surprise surprise they were each awarded a prize for losing all three games with the lowest score. This was an anniversary tournament and • this year's theme was Christmas, with the tables decorated in a Christmas motif while each lady bowler received a Christmas stocking filled with goodies. On. Sat., Aug. 27th, 13 members from Bowmanville went to an invitational Jitney in Oshawa which was also attended by members of the Whitby club. Due to rain they only played one game and eight ends of a second game. Unfortunately, your scribe was bowling in Port Hope that day and has no lists of winners. However, we understand understand that everyone enjoyed themselves immensely and is hoping that this also will turn out to be an annual event. FOR THE MALE RETURNING TO SCHOOL OR WORK . . . By Dick Budel The champions in two age- groups (Pee Wee and Mosquito) Mosquito) have been decided and next week will see the remaining remaining two titles settled. Newcastle Newcastle Colts teams were involved involved in six games over the past week which saw one team eliminated, one team advance to the semi-finals, one team through to the finals and one team win its championship. First let's see what our Squirts did. On Monday the K of C I boys went down by the narrowest of margins, 4 - 3, to a very experienced and solid Hampton squad. The Hampton Hampton boys advanced to the finals on the strength of this win while the Newcastle boys are trying to earn their way through the consolation event. Hampton's goals came from Richard Bateman.(tljree) and Neil Gerrits. Derek Anderson (two) and Dale Foster scored for Newcastle. On Wednesday the K of C I boys continued their pursuit of a place in the finals by defeating Rovers 3 - 0 on the strength of two goals by Dale Foster and one from Derek Anderson. If the K of C boys managed to beat Tim's on Monday, August 29, they will advance to meet Hampton in the championship final. This game will be played on Wednesday, August 31, at 6:30 in Hampton, and should be a dandy. The Atoms were busy as both Newcastle teams won on Tuesday, setting up another confrontation between these two teams on Thursday, August 25. On Tuesday the K of C Atoms defeated the Rangers 6 - 0 as Brian Buma (three), Ken Sayeau (two) and Ricky Burns (one) scored for Newcastle. Meanwhile, the Kraco Contracting Atoms defeated defeated Orono I by a score of 4 - 0 through goals by John Rogerson (three) and Brandon Brandon Coyle (one). Thursday's contest between the two Newcastle Newcastle teams was a lopsided affair as the K of C boys jumped into an early lead and never looked back in racing to a 6 - 0 victory. No details were available on the goal scoring. The K of C Atoms will now meet Tyrone I in Tyrone on August 30 (Tuesday) to determine the championship. ' The Port of Newcastle Mosquitos capped their season by defeating Tyrone 3 - 0 on Thursday to take the championship. championship. This wound up a perfect season for the Newcastle Newcastle boys as they were unbeaten unbeaten and untied throughout the entire competition. Richard Budel scored the winner and Jeff Koopmans added two insurance tallies in the Colts win; The entire squad played very well to help preserve Peter Zantingh's shut-out in the final game. The Pee Wee championship game was delayed as Orono and Hubbard's played to a 1 -1 tie on Monday. The replay on Tuesday resulted in a 0 - 0 tie after overtime. Hubbard's finally triumphed 5 - 2 on penalty shots to advance to the final. This game was played on Thursday in Tyrone and the host team finally won after a see-saw battle which saw the lead change several times before the final score of 5 - 3 was reached.
