Here, Lord Athol Layton, shows one of the moves that made him famous during a 28-year career in the wrestling ring. Lord Layton, despite his reputation as a villain, and arch-enemy of Whipper Billy Watson, is really a good guy, Bowmanville Rotarians learned. Lord Layton spoke to the club about his wrestling career and his volunteer work with the handicapped during a speech last Thursday at the regular meeting of the club. And while it's good to do things to help others, the guest speaker reminded his audience that the people who are offering assistance today may be the very same people who need help some time in the future. Lord Athol Layton is retired retired from the ring. He now lives in Mississauga and is employed as public relations relations manager for Bicardi Rum. It's a position which gives him an opportunity to stay in touch with his interests interests in helping the disabled disabled and the disadvantaged. disadvantaged. "The work you do in Rotary...and Rotary...and many other fundraising fundraising efforts is worth it. It's needed," Lord Layton said. by Peter Parrott As a professional wrestler, wrestler, Lord Athol Layton earned his living as a villain. villain. But members of the Bowmanville Bowmanville Rotary Club learned last week that he's a sportsman, a raconteur, an advocate of the disabled, and an all-round good guy. "Times have changed," Lord Layton told Bowmanville Bowmanville Rotarians. "The profession profession is a far cry from what it was." The smell of liniment and sweat from the dressing rooms has given way to the scents of hair spray and cologne cologne as athletes not only earn big salaries, but also have evolved into a different different kind of competitor. While the professional wrestlers of yesteryear relied relied on 75 per cent athletic ability and 25 per cent showmanship, today's gladiators have reversed that trend and rely on 75 per cent showmanship, Lord Layton remarked after his speech to Bowmanville Rotarians last Thursday at the Flying Dutchman Motor Inn. Successful wrestlers need a solid background of amateur experience in the sport, along with gymnastic ability and showmanship, he added. Lord Layton, a veteran of 28 years and 3,500 professional professional bouts, recalls that he started his career at age 29. Lord Layton told Rotarians Rotarians that he wanted to be an athlete and showman ever since he was a child. But it wasn't until he and his wife visited a professional professional bout in Sydney, Australia Australia that he saw a way of making his childhood fantasy fantasy come true. As he watched his first profes-. sional match, he saw his future future career. "They held the emotions of 10,000 people in the palms of their hands," he recalled. When he moved to Canada, from his native Australia, Australia, he was immediately cast as a villain in Toronto. Toronto. Due to the popularity popularity of hometown hero Whipper Whipper Billy Watson, Lord Layton had no choice but to play the role of the villain. "I was booed constantly for everything I did to the Whipper," he said. Of course, there were some advantages. Whereas Whipper Watson had to be kind to his fans when they asked for autographs, or stopped to talk, Lord Layton could tell them to get lost. Actions like these could only improve is stature as a bad guy. ■ Although Whipper Watson Watson and Lord Layton may have been rivals in the ring, they are allies when it comes to helping their fellow fellow man. Lord Layton's work in this field has earned him the Ontario Medal for good citizenship. He is a director of the St. Alban's Boys' and Girls' Club and is on the Advisory Council for the Handicapped Handicapped in Ontario. "The handicapped arc still crying out to be recognized recognized and to be accepted into the mainstream of society," society," said Lord Layton. First across the finish line and 1983 Quench Run champion champion is Ted McKeigan, a 31-year-old Torontonian who ran the race as part of his training program for upcoming upcoming marathon runs. Ted finished finished the race in 31:36 to win the 10km Men's Open and Quench Run titles. Both course records set at Saturday's event however were set by female runners. Silvia Ruegger, a 22-year-old Newcastle racer who's vying for a spot on Canada's Olympic Olympic track and field team, shattered shattered the course record by more than 90 seconds to win the 10 km Women's Open title in a record time of 35:38. Last year's winning time was 37:02. The second course record was set by Toronto's Diane Fetzko, who shaved five seconds off her own course record to win the Women's 10 km 30-39 title in a record 38:57. . Ms. Fetzko won the same event last year with a time of 39:02. Just under 500 runners from across Ontario registered for this year's Quench Run, which is sponsored by General Foods in association with the Cobourg Cobourg Rotary Club and Cobourg Family Y. Top Cobourg finisher was Brett Byers, a regular Quench Run competitor and local racer who finished third in the 10km Men's Open competitions competitions with a time of 33:06. Cobourg runners Vera Mcllwham and Kathy Hart finished second and third respectively respectively in the 10km Women's Masters event. As in the past, Peterborough area runners also figured prominently in the winners' circle. Dr. David McGillivray placed first in the 10 km Men's 30-39 category, with a time of 33:21. The,win was the first for Dr. McGillivray in race competition competition "and just helped make this the best racing summer ever for me," he said in a post-race interview. Peterborough's Rayma Dixon became the first runner to claim a Quench Run hat- trick when she won her third consecutive 10 km Women's Masters title in 44:56. The Quench Run win comes hot on the heels of Mrs. Dixon's first- place finish in the Canadian Masters' 5,000-metre track championships. "But the Quench Run is my favorite race - it's a great course and a great organization," she said. "Peterborough racers make a point of never missing this race." Scarborough's Mike McConnell repeated his first place finish in the 10 km Men's Masters' category, winning the title in a time of 35:29, just seconds off the 35:09 course record he set in 1982. Winners in the 5km race this year were Matthew Goad of Bowmanville (15:34) and Ana- Marie Valverde of Bramalea (17:08). At 13 years old, Ms. Valverde is also the youngest winner ever in Cobourg's!
