6 The Canadian Statesman, Eowmanville, September 7,1983 Section Two Newtonville Daredevil Dies at Westgate Speedway Daredevil Ken Carter loses life while trying to break a world's record Rocket Rocket Car Jump Saturday, Sept 3rd at Westgate Speedway near Peterborough. Peterborough. While his first attempt failed on July 31st when he went into the 12' pond and barely escaped with his life. Thanks to qualified divers and breathing apparatus which he was wearing from start to finish. The divers were several minutes getting getting him out of the car. His words at that time were "Ladies and gentlemen, those divers saved me," and he went on to say he'd be back to try the jump Labour Day weekend and they were going to get it right next time. He then thanked those responsible and the Robinsons Robinsons for allowing him to make the jump. The car was badly damaged and was reconstructed reconstructed in a shop near Oshawa. One hundred and some hours were spent rebuilding rebuilding the rocket car. On his second attempt, witnessed by Adrian and Tina Boisnert from the Grandstands at the Speedway, Speedway, the car was tested in the woods behind the track. Three times the echoing roars rang out as they tested the rocket car engine. Ken then brought the car back in for refueling and to make the final preparations for the second attempt at the pond. The jolly Ken Carter was joking about the car being painted bright yellow; yellow; because earlier they ha"d painted the black Trans Am bright yellow so it could be seen clearing from the grandstands for the midnight midnight jump. Plus if he landed in the pond divers could find it easier with the bright yellow paint. The car was equipped both with a rocket engine plus a regular engine. The attempt was to successfully use the rocket engine to jump the pond, land on the landing ramp, start the regular regular car engine and go around the track to the finishing line. But this was not the case as horrified fans looked on. We heard the screaming thrust of the rocket engine and the car shot up the runway in perfect perfect form, going off the ramp at breathtaking speed, the tense crowd looked on. As the car overshot at an estimated estimated 100' in the air it made a half turn in mid-air, overshot overshot the landing ramp i and landed with a horrifying crunch. Immediately St. John's Ambulance and tow trucks were on the scene. But things weren't expected to turn out the way they did. The car had made a sum- mersalt in the air and landed on its roof. The crowd came to a hush as they looked on. Tow trucks and cutting torches pried Ken from the car. People's hearts fell when the announcer announcer came on the loudspeaker and said there was no movement from the driver. Several minutes went by and yet another announcement, announcement, Ken Carter was not breathing, he was given mouth to mouth re- scucitation. He was then rushed with police escort by St. John's Ambulance into Peterborough Civic Hospital. We got up early Sunday morning to hear the outcome outcome of Ken's condition. But by 9:30 no one could get any information from the hospital. They wouldn't tell of Ken's condition, only that the injuries were expected to be severe. That was all anyone knew at the time. We waited by the radio for the 11 o'clock news. Then we heard the news that made us both weak at the knees. Their first words were "Dead at the age of 45 -- Ken Carter." When speaking to Ken last weekend the jolly daredevil was quite confident confident the second attempt would be successful, and was pleased in talking with the spectators who had an interest in his goal in jumping jumping the pond. We found Ken very friendly and would speak to anyone who wished to speak to him. In our experiences in talking with him between jumps and races in the past we felt as if we knew him personally personally as many people talking to him did. That's the kind of man Ken Carter was. Thanks to CHEX News who were on the scene at both attempts and got excellent excellent film footage from the July 31st pond jump attempt, attempt, and for keeping us informed and taking it all the way to the end, Thanks also to the St. John's Ambulance Ambulance for being on the scene and local O.P.P. and everyone in the attempt to firec Ken and save his life.
