CLEAN-UP -- The East Beach Community Association will be sponsoring a cleanup of the public beach on September 10 and 11. Bob Brown, chairman of the association, explained that the groüp is looking for volunteers to join in the project. The work will begin at 10 a.m. each morning. In the event of rain, the cleanup will take place the following weekend, September 17 and 18. Refreshments will be served to all volunteers. The Squirts needed two games as on Monday, Aug. 26, Tim's and Newcastle I played to decided which team was going to meet Hampton in the final. The K of C Colts came up flat in this game although that can also be attributed to the vigor and aggressiveness of the Tim's Rental squad. Be that as it may, Tim's Rental came up with a 2 -1 victory thanks to two goals by Collin Taggart. The K of C goal came from Derek Anderson. Collin Taggart continued his torrid scoring pace in the season finale on Wednesday, as he single handedly out- scored the Hampton squad 3 - 2. Perhaps that should read - single-footedly! Obviously one player doesn't win a game by himself and the entire Tim's team played very well. And they had to for Hampton proved to be a stubborn' opponent especially in front of a large home-town crowd. However, they fell just short as they needed more than the goals that they got from Richard Bateman and Danny Martin. All in all, an excellent game. On Tuesday, the K of C Colt Atoms travelled to Tyrone for the Atom final. Despite the fact that they (the Colts) scored first, they were unable to hold off the Tyrone squad, which finally triumphed by a 3 - 2 score. Tyrone goals were scored by Willy Hackett, Stewart Liptay, and Eric Smith. KofC goals came from brian Buma and Ricky Burns. The game was an exciting cliff-hanger and a real advertisement advertisement for the entertainment entertainment value of soccer. Both teams are to be congratulated on their performance. Also, I think that a vote of thanks should go to Mel Putnam who was kind enough to act as a last minute replacement for a referee who had gone astray. Mel did a very creditable job under tense conditions and the best praise that I can give him is that his officiating had no bearing on the outcome of the game - and that is how it should be. For those of you who have followed soccer in my column for the past five years, you must know that it is a tradition that the season for any team coached by me, ends with a parents vs. sons game. This year the epic struggle took place on Thursday, Sept. 1, 1983, at the Newcastle Public School, in a more than usual tense atmosphere. You see, the boys of the Port of Newcastle Newcastle Mosquito squad had more to lose this year, namely an undefeated record. On the other hand the parents were desperate to inflict the season's first loss on the boys. The Parents surged to a 7 - 3 lead at half time thanks to a field goal by Larry Potter, to which was added a bonus point because this was Larry's first field goal ever. Don Stephenson Stephenson scored a double goal when the referee determined that Don in fact had scored on two goalies. The astute referee made Lyle take the kick the way he (Lyle) plays the game - backwards. This so startled the 11 goalies that the ball slipped through for a goal. There were several calls for bum ball as a couple of the boys were caught propelling the ball with that unmentionable unmentionable part of their anatomy.
