National Farmers Union Opposes Cattlemen's Checkoff At a recent meeting of the National Farmers Union, District 3 board members, the decision was made to oppose any form of compulsory check-off such as the referendum referendum being held in September, in Ontario, on the beef question. question. Any form of check-off that does not allow the farmer, in the initial stages, to choose whether he wants to pay or not is wrong. OMAF is holding a referendum referendum regarding a compulsory check-off on all beef marketed in Ontario in order to fund greater advertising and provide provide working capital for the Ontario Cattlemen's Association. Association. The NFU has taken this stand for the following reasons: 1. Farmers should be able to choose voluntarily which farm organization they wish to contribute contribute to. 2. The Cattlemen's Association Association does not market beef, they are only a promotional association, , 3. The National' Farmers Union represents all forms of farm commodities, including beef, and works together for the benefit of all farmers and farm commodities. 4. The National Farmers Union beef producers, along with many other beef producers producers in the province, feel strongly that the only form of marketing agency that would adequately work for their commodity would be a National Meat Authority, an agency which would include orderly marketing and supply management. We would not object, as beef producers, to paying a promotional promotional fee for the purpose of advertising beef, or any other meat product through this form or agency, as this would include a cost of production formula. Therefore, farmers would be able to maintain an economical and stable supply of fresh meat for consumers, t l n our a store 12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 7,1983 Section Two Obituaries DAVID CHARLES HOOEY The death of David Charles Hooey, aged 28, occurred on Monday, nugust 15th, 1983 at R.R. 3, Port Hope.
