NON CONTACT -- Anyone interested in playing in the Bowmanville Non Contact Hockey League this season should phone 623-4250 or 623-4028 after 5 p.m. BY GRANT C. Wade Just five days after an O.S.S. event in Belleville, the Ontario Sired two year old colt pacers were at It again on Saturday night at Kawartha Downs. Eighteen entries forced the $91,000 plus event to be split into two divisions at Kawartha Downs. The first division saw Doug Arthur shoot to the front with Mystery Skipper (Senor Skipper) Skipper) and that duo slipped past the quarter mile pole in point twenty nine and two fifths. Meanwhile, on the outside, the veteran Keith Waples had Hi Richard on the move and they moved to the front on the way into the clubhouse turn. The Springfield colt had things under control to mid-stretch. Hi Richard tripped the teletimer teletimer at the half in point fifty-nine and four-fifths and the % marker in one point twenty-nine and four-fifths. Around the final turn, Norm McKnight and Looker (Jon- S uil Hanover) were eyeing up îe leader and made a move. Looker flew through the stretch to collar Hi Richard and win it going away by two lengths. The mile time was a personal best for Looker and a new track standard for the age and gait, one point fifty-nine and three-fifths. Hi Richard finished second with Mystery Skipper third and Ranger Rick finished a close fourth after an early break behind the gate. Looker has now won half of his fourteen fourteen lifetime starts and has banked $68,731 for Looker Stable of St. George. The second division saw Tom Wantz pinch-hit for regular regular teamster Dan Johnson behind Amrock Wise Guy (KeystoenSmartie). That pair scored out of Post Two and scooted to the front. Lawson got his colt away fourth, but moved him past the grandstand and was on the move. Shanes Mint sat third on the outside past the (&, but when the field straightened out down the backstretch, grabbed second position and stayed there about a length and a half back. They flew through a third frame in a crisp pint twenty-eight and three-fifths. Shanes Mint got his chance as they turned for home and under some urging from Lawson grabbed command command in the stretch and posted a 1 % length victory in 1.59 and four-fifths. Kawartha Sandy (Hustling Time) made a big move for Norm McKnight and collared Amrock Wise Guy to gather up second prize. Both colts were timed in 2.00. Shanes Mint has now won % of his 12 lifetime starts for owner-trainer John Medwid of Thurs. Night Hockey Lge. Rosters Castle Hotel - John Hogarth, T. Baker, R. Cryderman, D. Wilson, G. The Ontario Sires Stake event set two records for purse money. The gross purse $91,419 and the individual heat purses $45,709.79 were records at Kawartha Downs and drew a crowd of 2,241. To set the stage for the quick miles in the Stake events, Hieland John equalled his lifetime lifetime best in the evening's second race when he collared Floral Emblem in the stretch to win in a crisp 1.59 and one-fifth. That pushed the season earnings over $10,000 for Hieland John and owner Cliff Hie of Cobourg. With the three miracle miles on Saturday, that gives trackman trackman Frank Alexander a total of seventeen miles in 1983 in 2:00 or better. Fourteen of the seventeen have been lower than 2:00. Action continues through the Fall Meet with harness racing at Kawartha Downs every Thursday and Saturday. The next two Saturday's feature Cobourg Night at the Races on September 17 and Peterborough Night at the Races on September 24.
