The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, September 14,1983 Restaurant Owner Charged with Arson After Fire The owner of a Highway 115 restaurant has been charged with arson following a fire last week which gutted the rear portion of the building. Durham Regional Police laid the charge against Victor Longo, proprietor of the Venezia Restaurant Restaurant just south of Orono. The fire occurred about 12:35 a.m. last Thursday morning. Estimated damage damage to the building and contents has been set at $145,000. Y elverton News Our community has learned with regret of the passing of two individuals who were closely associated with it in the past. We refer to Mr. Clifford Snyder who was a frequent visitor to our hamlet, visiting with his wife Alda's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hughie McGill. Cliff was a friendly likeable chap deeply respected respected by all. The second person we referred to was Mrs. Elva Didero of Peterborough (formerly Capstick) who attended attended Yelverton Public School at SS No. 1. Elva, too, was a very congenial person with a happy cheery personality personality who will be sadly missed by a wide scope of friends. A large turnout of four was present at Yelverton on Thursday night to see the "Maltheb" gals come from behind to win the game 5 to 4. Mary McCullough was the winning pitcher. Commerce. In a letter to council, Chamber president A.W. Brown asked that a representative representative of the Corporation Corporation of the Town of Newcastle Newcastle serve on the Chamber of Commerce in order to create closer ties between the two organizations. Council agreed at its meeting Monday to appoint Councillor Hubbard as its representative to the C of C. A soccer tournament planned by the Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club to raise Rinds for the Oshawa, Whitby, Newcastle, United Way was sanctioned by town council on Monday. Organizers of the event informed the municipality that the tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9, at Oshawa's Civic Fields. Eight teams, including the Darlington All-Stars, will be represented at the tournament. The event is planned as an annual fXmd-raising project project for the United Way. Newcastle council has agreed agreed to declare "Private Property Week" in the municipality from October 2 to 10. In a letter from the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board, members of council were advisèd that the week is sponsored by the Canadian Real Estate Association and its 100 member real estate boards. The theme of Property Week for 1983 is "Preserving "Preserving the Spirit of the Land." Newcastle's Community Care organization has had to increase its fees in order to bring them in line with rising costs. In a letter to town council this week, the Town of Newcastle Newcastle Community Care noted that prices have been raised a little higher than in the past because of surging surging increases in the cost of gas.
