By Michele DeLorenzo Darryl .Vaneyk will be packing up his old kit bag and hitting the road for a year as a performer with the international cast of Up With People. Darryl, 20, a Tyrone native native and graduate of Cour- tice Secondary School, participated participated in the performing arts all through school. "I don't know if I want to make the entertainment business my career. There's a lot of competition. I was raised on a farm and it's a very different lifestyle," Darryl said. The Up With People organization, organization, based in Tucson, Tucson, Arizona, consists of five travelling performing casts of 100 young people each, from countries all over the world. Ten thousand people, between between the ages of 17 to 25, apply each year and only 500 are accepted . "It's not talent but'personality that counts. You don't have to be exceptionally musically inclined inclined to be chosen," Darryl explained. July 5 is D Day for Darryl. He will be flying to Tucson to partake in a rigorous six week orientation and training training course. "We'll be working working 12 hours a day learning technical aspects, such as lighting, plus the performing performing duties." The cost of the venture is $9,000 which covers travel, food and expenses when not billeted with a host family. Darryl raised most of it by fundraising. "We held two dances, a travel log and a musical concert. These efforts efforts raised about $3,000 and I would like to thank the people in the community community for their help. I also had to take out a bank loan." The annual budget of Up With People is $10 million. Student fees make up 33 per cent, performances and related related sales 53 per cent and gifts and grants the remaining remaining 14 per cent of the total. Darryl stressed the fact that the trip will not be all performing. "This is a chance for an individual to travel and meet people; to learn about different languages languages and cultures." Up With People began in 1968 and is a non-political, non-religious group that promotes communication and fellowship, Darryl said. This travelling muscial troupe will perform in prisons, prisons, old age homes, schools, famous concert halls and at the Olympic games in Los Angeles. "We have to be able to perform under a lot of different conditions," he said. To be accepted Darryl had to pass a physical and dental examination. As a result he was required to lose 30 pounds and due to daily swim sessions, has almost almost reached that goal. "One of the most important important things is the support of my family and the community community in this venture," he said. According to Darryl, the year will be well worth the effort. "The people I will meet and the doors that will be opened would be otherwise otherwise . unattainable. It's a good opportunity because I don't know yet what I really want to do." As a novice traveller Darryl Darryl is greatly anticipating the trip. "I think it will be great and I'm looking forward forward to the fun. All the effort effort has been worth it." The fact that Darryl is a people fan will be his greatest greatest asset. "There's too much materialism in the world. The most important thing in this world is people, not a new car or a night on the town."
