The score remained 1 - 0 at the half with Bowmanville having most of the territorial play but failing to capitalize on several good scoring chances. Bowmanville picked up the pace in the second half and increased their lead to 4 - 0 on goals by Greg Healey (two) and Jim Pithie. State Contractors continued to dominate the game almost totally, holding Whitby to a single shot on goal in the second half: Congratulations to the Bowmanville team, who advance to meet Pickering in the semi final. State Contractors Capture Newmarket Soccer Championship On Sunday, September 2nd the Bowmanville State Contractors Contractors Minor Pee Wees travelled to Newmarket to play in the 8th Magna Invitational Invitational Soccer tournament. In their first game, the Bowmanville squad entertained entertained a team from South London in a closely contested game which was marked by numerous yellow cards to the London team and somewhat hazardous officiating. Showing poise and control, the State squad emerged 2 -1 victors in a chippy game which did not reflect the ethics of fair play and sportsmanship. sportsmanship. In their second game, the Bowmanville team played 'Woodbridge. In their last meeting the Woodbridge side beat State 2 -1 in the Ontario cup 3rd round, and Bowmanville Bowmanville were looking to even the score. However, in a game which featured good entertaining soccer from both teams, the Woodbridge team emerged 4 - 2 victors, although the game was not sewn up until the last few minutes. In their third game, the Bowmanville team played a Thornhill squad which were previously unbeaten in tournament tournament play. The State team played a solid game with goals coming from several team members who do not normally feature on the score sheet. In particular, particular, spectacular goals from Mike Ruthard and George Bryant helped pace Bowmanville Bowmanville to a well deserved 7-2 victory. With three teams having four points the State Contractors Contractors team advanced to final round play on the strength of a single goal advantage over the Woodbridge side. On Monday, September 3rd the State Contractors played the final against Martingrove, who had won all their games scoring 13 and conceding only two. In a previous meeting in early season play the Martin- grove team defeated Bowmanville Bowmanville 9 - 4 so the State Contractors squad were in no doubt that it would be a difficult difficult job. However, the Bowmanville team settled quickly and took the lead after several defensive defensive miscues by the Martin- grove side. Bowmanville increased their lead to 3 - 1 at the half, after a tremendous display of team work and solid hard work by every team member. In the second half, Bowmanville Bowmanville absorbed all the early Martingrove pressure with solid defensive play and padded their lead to 4 -1 after 25 minutes with Tony Van Hoof's third goal of the game. Quite an accomplishment for someone who usually keeps them off the score sheet in our own net. Our team won praise from all onlookers for their total team effort and hard work. Every team members contributed contributed 110 percent but special mention should be made of Greg Healey's award for the Most Valuable Player - a well deserved award for a tremendous effort. The team would like to thank all parents and friends for their support.
