Editorial: New Image for Technical Department By Merrilce Brown Technical students have always had a stigma attached to them; they were considered to be for "slower" or nonacademic nonacademic students, This prejudice has often led some academically-oriented, university-bound university-bound students to neglect technical studies. It is true that some students who do poorly in other subject areas often excel at shop, since these subjects may not be directly related to their chosen occupation and Tech, is. A course in technical studies gives the student a marketable skill and a chance for a decent job. Many high- paying jobs advertised in newspapers are technically oriented, such as Design Engineers and Manufacturing Supervisors. In a shaky job market, a skill learned in a technical studies course can give the student an edge or "something to fall back upon." The stigma attached to Tech, is unjust and unfair. Technical studies fit in well with academic studies. After all, as Mr. Varga, head of the Technical Department at Bowmanville High School says, "You wouldn't want to be operated on by a surgeon who couldn't hdndle a scalpel, or be worked on by a dentist who couldn't control his hands." Tech, promotes manual dexterity. Some dentistry courses in university even require the applicant to have taken a technical machine shop course. Mr. Varga has had three students go on to become surgeons. Academics and Tech, can work hand in hand. All students can benefit from the basic life skills taught in Technical studies. Many young drivers, including myself, know very little about the cars they drive. A simple carburetor adjustment, the changing of a tire and general maintenance of a car are skills which may become very valuable to the student if the car is stranded miles from a service station. Organization, which is invaluable in any task which you may attempt, is the key success in Tech. Most Technical notebooks are suitable for framing. The shops themselves are immaculate and organized. Students also have a respect for safety "drilled" into them. The Bowmanville High School Technical Department has won the Industrial Accident Prevention Association Award every year since Mr. Johnston introduced Technical Education in 1955. B.H.S/s record is one of the best, if not the best, in the province of Ontario due to the stress that the Technical Department places on safety. Since the industrial accident rate is alarmingly high for those students in their first three years after High School, the maxim, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," is proven. The Technical Department at B.H.S. deserves some recognition. With seven staff members, it is one of the largest departments in the school. Presently, over 500 students are enrolled in Technical studies and because new legislation demands that every new student have at least one Technical or Business credit, that number VIDEO SPECIAL MACHINE RENTAL $ 8 50 PER DAY PLUS 2 FREE MOVIES (Weekends Included) J & T VIDEO 27 Second St. • Bowmanville 623-1416 -Offer Valid Until Nov. 2,1984 $?c #lbe 3|ealtl) â>f)oppe is the place for all your baking supplies and save on bulk foods, npS| vitamins, herbs and all natural foods.
