The Cub section registered a total of 16 boys between the ages of eight and 11. We have three new leaders who volunteered volunteered their time to help work and have fun with the boys. On Monday night Sept. 17, we arranged to have a tour of the packing facilities at Twin Brand Apple Orchard. We saw how the fruit and vegetables were washed, dried and sorted before it is packaged and shipped shipped to the supermarkets. We went into one of the very large cold storage rooms where the temperature was a constant 34-36 degrees F. In here we learned that the room is filled with bins of apples, it is then locked and not opened until after it has been inspected about three months later. These apples are then brought out to be washed, dried, sorted, sorted, packaged and shipped to the markets during the winter. At the end of the tour the boys were given the task of choosing choosing either an apple or a pepper (they were packing peppers while we were visiting) to take home. Upon leaving the boys gave Mr. Doug Gibson a hearty cheer for letting us come and learn about the packing and storage of fruit and vegetables.
