Things are changing more and more rapidly as we NOTICE ANNUAL MEETING MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, BOWMANVILLE CORPORATION Wednesday, Junes, 1985 8:00 p.m. COUNCIL CHAMBERS 132 Church Street Bowmanville, Ontario FOR PURPOSES OF: 1. Hearing Reports 2. Report of Hospital Auditors 3. Election of Directors move towards the 21st century. century. Education has an important important part to play, both preparing young people for the future job markets and keeping those already in the work force up-to-date. Bowmanville Rotarians heard a little bit about the colossal job facing the education education system from former vice-principal at Bowmanville Bowmanville High School, Terry Hawkins. Dr. Hawkins, now Superintendent of Instruction Instruction for the Peterborough Board of Education, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club's meeting on May 9th. Continuing education for adults is an increasingly popular and necessary part of the educational system. As more people find themselves squeezed out of the job market, more seek to retrain or upgrade the skills they have. High schools offer diploma programs programs for adults who didn't finish secondary school, providing courses that are geared to a variety of aptitudes aptitudes and interests. Even now, 65 per cent of the people entering high school will not go on to further education. Many of these will find that a postsecondary postsecondary degree, or technical technical training, will be necessary in the disheartening disheartening search for work. Continuing education "continues from wherever you left off," said Dr. Hawkins. Hawkins. It is available at local schools, and often in industries industries and businesses which recognize that in todays' world of rapid technological technological change, trainingmustbe an ongoing process. The education system itself itself is changing. Dr. Hawkins Hawkins called Ontario's Bill 82 "the most progressive and enlightened legislation ever to come out of the Ministry of Education." "Simply put, Bill 82 says that every kid can go to school," said Terry Hawkins. Hawkins. The problems which in the past prevented a handicapped child from going to à regular school must now be solved. "The trial balloon that flew," French immersion, is meeting with great success. Dr. Hawkins told the Rotarians Rotarians that 10 to 15 per cent of the children entering kindergarten are in French immersion, where it is offered. offered. The introduction of Junior kindergarten is a recent recent and controversial innovation innovation in Ontario, although although it is common in other parts of North America. Dr. Hawkins explained: "children coming coming into regular kindergarten kindergarten (at age five) were so disadvantaged disadvantaged in language, we felt we should be getting them sooner." "Computer literacy" is a new concern in the classroom classroom and will be an essential essential part of education from now on. Teaching people in a world where change comes with increasing rapidity is a real challenge for the system. system. The so called "basics" may not be appropriate for people who will be entering the job market in the 21st century. j;|i And hej;e's a sobering thought: mdse people are in school today!..
