Sires Stakes Kickoff The kickoff event for the Ontario Sires Stakes three- year-old pacing fillies will be held at Kawartha Downs in Peterborough on Saturday, June 1, and an assault on the track record of 1:59 is a very real possibility. Heading the list of probable starters is Auntie Jean, a homebred filly who was the top of her class in the 1984 two- year-old pacing filly events of the OSS. A daughter of Hustling Hustling Time, who at one time stood at stud at Kawartha Farms in Peterborough before heading to stud duty on the east coast, Auntie Jean earned more than $73,000 last year for Puslinch owner Zelda Chalk- ley. Mike Schaefer of Moore- head is the trainer-driver of this filly. Auntie Jean won the qualifying qualifying race of her sophomore season in 2:02.4-5 recently at Mohawk Raceway in Camp- bellville, pacing the final half in 1:00 flat. Another top candidate in this category is Ambro Daisy. This daughter of Ambro Ranger earned more than $66,000 in OSS competition last year for trainer-driver Dave Wall of London. Owned by the Burboy Farms of Brampton, Robert Fisher of Gianworth and Colin Ferguson of St. Thomas, Ambro Daisy has already won' in 2:00.3-5 over London's Western Fair Raceway half- mile track this year and appears more than ready for a strong OSS campaign. A prominent local candidate is Byes Chesty, owned and operated by Garry Bye of Peterborough. A daughter of Kawartha Farms' Kawartha Skipper (he stands for a stud fee of $3,500 at the nearby Peterborough farm), Byes Chesty has won all three of her starts this year at Kawartha Downs, the fastest in 2:01.4-5 for driver Dan Gassien on May 16th. Among the fillies who have also gotten off the mark quickly quickly this year are Above the Crowd, a daughter of Armbro Ranger who won a stakes event at Mohawk Raceway in 1:59.4-5 earlier this month for trainer John Yake and owner Theo Koerner of St. Thomas; DR. BETH, an Armbro Omaha Omaha filly who won at Windsor Raceway in 1:59.3-5 in March and is now racing on the Ontario Jockey Club circuit for trainer Jean Poulin and co-owners Rogers Grover Inc. of Leamington and Bill Redman Redman of London: JOTARIO, another daughter of Kawartha Skipper who has won in 1:59.4-5 at Mohawk Raceway for trainer-driver Pat Crowe and owners Crowe Stable of Stouffville and Baker Urdan of Michigan, and H H JESSICA, a daughter or Senor Skipper (also standing at Kawartha Farms for a fee of $2,500), who won at Mohawk Raceway in 2:01.3-5 recently 'with Pat Hunt driving for the D B M Stables of Madoc, Ont. An interesting aside to this year's crop 1 of three-year-old filly pacers 'is the absence of an Ontario-bred ' .filly who holds the Canadian season's record. Reanna, a daughter of the former invitation pacer Renees Boy who stands at stud in London, Ontario was not kept eligible to the Ontario Sires Stakes by her owner- trainer Bill Durbridge. That decision has made the owners of the fillies who are Ontario Sires Stakes eligible breathe a bit of a sigh of relief. Reanna, who raced in low-priced claiming races in February in London, suddenly came into her own and now holds the 1:56.4-5 national season's mark after a mile she went at Windsor Raceway in April. Post time for the Kawartha Downs OSS is 7:30 p.m. The girls' floor hockey team from Enniskillen Public School placed a very respectable second the Darlington Floor Hockey Tournament. in Here, from left to right: front row - Kelli Dilworth, Sharon Shaw, Michelle Whitbread; middle row - Katy Laverty, Nicole Heming, Wendy Blackburn, Sarah English; and back row - Lisa Rekker, Tamara Tamara Cooper, Jule Malet-Veale, Lisel Walters, Charlene Adams.
