Ole and Bruce jokingly recalled the time Ole talked Bruce into cutting his hair with the electric cow clippers^ Mrs. Laura Avery, Mr. Ray Demers and Sylvie, Oshawa, were also Sunday I have to admit that I was wrong in my predictions predictions concerning a Liberal/NDP alliance in the Ontario legislature. legislature. I had surmised that an agreement between the two parties over some form of co-operative co-operative government would happen around the same time that pigs learned to fly or cows successfully leaped over the moon. Well, the sky seems relatively clear of airborne airborne animals and yet the Liberal/NDP marriage marriage is almost complete. complete. I admit that this proves my prediction to be wrong. But I still feel that my reasoning behind behind the forecast was correct. In other words, the political alliance may go ahead all right. And it may even result in and end to the Progressive Progressive Conservative regime regime in Ontario. But the new coalition won't do many favors to either participant. In the past, Canadian political parties have shied away from coalitions. coalitions. There are European European nations where a list of parties would read like the yellow pages and where power is based on a consensus among these groups. In these nations, members of a single party holding holding 38 per cent of the vote could probably crown themselves kings. But in Canada we have had only a few parties parties and prefer to polarize our opinions. So what happens next? Well, the members members of opposition parties parties will certainly earn themselves a place in the history books as "giant killers". They will go down in history as the people who dinner guests. Miss Joanne Cryderman, Orillia, was a Saturday overnight overnight guest of Mr. and Mrs. Len Stainton. Sherri and Laura Piggott were Friday overnight guests of Pastor Joe and Mrs. Lafave and family to help Nikki celebrate celebrate her birthday on Saturday. Saturday. Happy birthday Nikki and many happy returns of the day. Congratulations goes to Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Sharp on the birth of their baby bundle of blue on Wednesday. ended the four decades of Progressive Conservative Conservative government. But I think it's more interesting interesting to consider the long-range impact of this action. The long term outlook outlook may still be in favor of the Tories rather' than the NDP/ Liberal partnership. Look at it this way: Assuming that the opposition opposition parties take the reins of power, the PCs have accomplished a rather neat trick. They have traded a difficult position as the holder of a slim minority minority for a role as the only viable opposition. And with 52 seats plus years of experience on the government side, they would make formidable formidable opponents. (That is provided, of course, that they can make the psychological adjustment adjustment to their role in opposition.) opposition.) And, no doubt, the Throne Speech which will be defeated by the coalition will be one containing a whole bag of popular "goodies" which are normally offered offered only before an election. Tories can then have the satisfaction satisfaction of claiming that their opponents defeated defeated all kinds of progressive progressive legislation simply simply because they wanted power. Finally, by becoming allies, the NDP and Liberals Liberals are losing ideological ground. Distinctions are becoming becoming blurred. And that will make the next election a difficult one to fight. Some of the more moderate Liberals, for example, may object to taking on NDP as junior partners and could, perhaps, prefer to support support the Progressive Conservatives. Factions Factions of the NDP may resentthe jointventure with persons they view as "less progressive" Liberals. The Liberals may well claim in the upcoming upcoming election that since the parties have worked together, the voter might as well choose the Liberals as the NDP. And, of course, the NDP could make the same claim. In the end, the allied parties will have damaged damaged their credibility in one of two ways. The coalition may be read by voters as evidence that the two parties are basically the same and that differences be tween them are essentially essentially part of the political political game-playing process. process. Alternately, the voter may see the partnership as proof that the parties, although although ideologically different, are so determined determined to gain power that they will agree to almost anything. Neither interpreta tion looks promising for the long-range prospects prospects of either party. And in the resulting confusion, the "Big Blue Machine" may just roll back into power.
