"Sky-High" Values at Former Winner to Defend Record at Mosport Can-Am Creative Pastimes 3-DAYS ONLY Thurs., Fri., Sat. - May30-31-June 1 at Creative Pastimes 5 King St. E. Bowmanville Telephone 623-1546 When the man known as the "racing dentist" returns to Mosport for the seasonopening seasonopening Budweiser Can- Am, May 31st, June 1st and 2nd; he'll have a tough act to follow - his own. With victory after leading every lap and setting a new track record on the only occasion occasion he ever raced at Mosport, Mosport, Dr. Lou Sells is in the rare category of never having having been beaten at Mosport. Sell's victory in the 1968 SCCA Formula A Grand Prix was even more noteworthy since he had only five laps of practice. With five victories in eight races, he went on to become the SCCA Grand Prix Champion Champion of 1968. The racing dentist from California retired from four-wheeled sport and moved to Hawaii where he retired from dentistry and built a Macadamia Nut candy factory. Last year he came out of retirement and raced in the U.S. southwest, shattering track records and winning. This season he plans to return to big league racing in the Can-Am but not in the traditional five litre V8 machine. Instead he will be in a two litre machine. The handicapping of the five litre cars gives him reason to believe that he can take on the big cars in a David and Goliath match - and win. Sell's mount for the Can- Am is a European style Formula Formula II March-BMW identical identical to that driven by Kim Campbell of Dallas, Texas to the Can-Am 2 Litre title in 1984. Sell has had a custom custom body made in Mississauga Mississauga and thinks that the March's superior road holding holding will match his style. Sell applauds the new Can-Am rules saying "Close racing is the answer. This is what people really want to see." Though underpowered with two litre's of engine against five, Sell can run the 150 mile race non-stop while the thirsty five litre car must refuel twice to make the distance. His car will suffer on top speed but it excels in braking into the turns and roadholding through them. "I can't be too overconfident overconfident at Mosport because of the high speed," Sell concludes. concludes. Sell won't be alone in the David and Goliath department. department. Several other two litre contenders have hopes of challenging the big five litre machines. Cliff Dawson Dawson of Montreal has a March similar to Sell's but with a British Hart powerplant instead instead of the German BMW. Jeremy Hill of Willow- dale, Ontario, winner of Mosport June '83 2 Litre Budweiser Can-Am is a strong threat in his Photon- Hart. Hill is best known for his gritty last corner pass in last September's Budweiser Budweiser Can-Am on the final lap, giving him the lead at the finish line. A time penalty penalty for bumping eventual winner Kim Campbell off the track, dropped Hill behind behind the Texan in the final standings. Bill Vincent of Kenosha, Wisconsin will debut his new Mazda powered Yorkshire Yorkshire KV5 which should have power to match the BMW and Hart powered entries. entries.
