This attitude reversed itself sharply in the nineteenth century with the romanticization cl death. To generalize about our own century, or the early part of it, one could say that the prevailing attitude was one of denial. Increasingly, death has occurred among the elderly, and more often away in hospitals than at home. The circle has narrowed so that often only the Immediate family attended. Death was not only kepi from most ol society, it was often kept from the dying person. Recently, however, . we have come to realize how such avoidance and denial can have negative effects - on both the individual and the family. There is a new attitude spreading, to deal realistically and meaningfully with death.
