j The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 28,1985 Energy Committee to Begin Homework on Darlington From Page One others except committee members and their staff had been barred from the fact-finding mission to Darlington. Gates to the nuclear power plant were locked so that the MPPs would have a private tour. But Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz argued that the press should be allowed to interview committee members at least at the start of their visit. He readily agreed agreed that the actual tour of the plant should be private. "I didn't see any problem with them coming to the Information Centre and meeting with the committee," explained Mr. Cureatz. He added that newspaper reporters reporters and TV cameras had accompanied accompanied the group on a tour of a generating station in Thunder Bay the previous day. He emphasized that the closed tour was at the request of members of the committee in charge of arranging arranging the visits, not Ontario Hydro. Mr. Cureatz convinced Hydro officials officials to let representatives of The Statesman and the Oshawa Times into the generating station site before before the majority of the committee arrived later by bus. A member of the committee himself, himself, Mr. Cureatz told Hydro that he would take responsibility for the fact that the media was present. When they arrived at the site a few minutes after Mr. Cureatz, representatives representatives of the three parties forming the select committee willingly, willingly, agreed to a brief interview in which they discussed their work to date. "It's an opportunity for members to familiarize themselves with some of the projects in preparation for four weeks of hearings," said Seeking Mayor's Position by Diane Pickett Courtice businessman Darryl Somerscales will be seeking the mayor's position in the November 12th municipal election. Mr. Somerscales, who presently lives in Courtice with his wife Betty Anne, has been a resident of Newcastle Newcastle all his life and says: "I feel strongly about preserving the identity identity of all the communities that the Town of Newcastle encompasses". He suggests an annual event such as Oshawa's Fiesta Week, held here (n Newcastle, would contribute to the preservation of the area's heritage. heritage. The 32-year-old candidate feels he can bring "youthful enthusiasm" to the mayor's position, and while he does not want to criticize the current current council generally, he does think that there has been some "alienation between the council and the people". "I don't have any axe to grind but I'm concerned. I want to be for the people who live here...the community community where you live is you, the individual, individual, not a small group sitting on council," says Mr. Somerscales. He is very familiar with the Town and "thousands" of people in it, having sold real estate and insurance insurance here. Now the president of his own plastics manufacturing company, company, Mr. Somerscales believes that his business expertise will prove useful in a political role in the municipality. As a businessman, Mr. Somerscales Somerscales believes that Newcastle is an ideal place for industrial development. development. "There is tremendous opportunity being so close to Toronto," Toronto," he says, and adds, "we can also keep our uniquely rural identity." identity." Mr. Somerscales has no prior experience experience in the political arena, but has been watching the televised council meetings "religiously". He plans to canvass workers as they come out of local plants and erect signs to publicize his candidacy. "I'll be asking people what they are concerned about," he says," an'd I'm looking forward to the opportunity opportunity of meeting many more people in the Town of Newcastle." Before Before the week is over, it will have looked at old hydraulic stations and modern ones, old and new thermal generating plants and the nuclear facilities. She described the visit to Darlington as "an opportunity to do my homework." "I think it is fair to say we have come to this with an open mind," said Chris Ward, MPP for Wentworth. Premier David Peterson has, however, indicated that the construction construction of Darlington may be à mistake and had requested the select committee to report on Ontario Ontario Hydro affairs. Mr. Andrewes noted that his committee committee members preferred to tour the site privately because: "we felt as a committee that we were here as part of our education. We weren't here to hear submissions." The public will have its opportunity opportunity to state the case for or against Darlington beginning the week of September 16 to 18. The interim report of the committee committee will be tabled in the Legislature during its fall sitting which begins October 15. The mandate of the Select Committee Committee on Energy is to "inquire and report within 10 months on Ontario Hydro affairs." Too Many Job Openings by Catherine Denny Contrary to the work shortage experienced experienced in previous years, the Oshawa area is now reporting too many job openings and not enough people to fill them. "Oddly enough, there just isn't enough people interested in finding finding jobs to fill the growing demand," demand," explained Gary Hillier, public relations liason officer for the Canada Employment Centre. In July, the centre received 684 job orders, more than double the 333 job vacancies posted in the same month last year. Gary Hillier explained that the trend seems to be a simple matter of improved economy and the fact that it's back to school time again. "Employers have indicated that with the economy improving and students returning to school, they have immediate openings available to be filled on a permanent basis," explained Mr. Hillier. "I think a lot of businesses are deciding that the summer help proved to be such an asset that they just can't do without the extra employee." The public liason officer went on to say that the new situation is an excellent opportunity for those entering entering the labour market for the first time or those re-entering after a prolonged absence to gain valuable valuable work experience. Most of the jobs available pay minimum wage, which is about $4 an hour, and are in the service sector. sector. "I guess these jobs aren't particularly particularly tempting, but they're great, if only for the experience they offer." said Mr. Hillier. Jobs posted in the service sector include opportunities for waiters, waitresses, dishwashers, and other domestic work, none of which require require a specific education, skills, or experience. There are also immediate immediate vacancies in janitorial and landscaping, both of which pay higher than minimum wage. The employment centre has also posted some interesting positions in the clerical area paying $200 to $250 per week and jobs in the retail trade sector with a starting wage of $5 an hour. Also, there is an ongoing need for experienced drafting persons as well as all trades, especially the machining trades paying excellent wages. YOU'LL NEVER SEE PRICES THIS LOW...
