The crown, which will be awarded to a local beauty on September 5th, is being handed down by last year's queen, Shelley Geddes. She readily admits that being Orono Fair Queen is "a heck of a lot of fun". The Bowmanville girl, who was crowned opening day of Orono's 1984 fair, was chosen from among six competitors competitors based on a short resume resume on her community involvement, involvement, her singing talent, talent, and her speaking ability. ability. "We were each required to model two outfits; one casual and one. formal dress," explained Shelley adding that "much of the judges' decision weighed upon the girls' resumes which were entitled: Why I Want to be Fair Queen." Most of Shelley's duties took place during the three- day event and included handing out ribbons and presiding over various activities activities at the fair. A second year Physical Education student at York University, Shelley never dreamed that she'd win the contest but entered just for fun. "I usually show hunters and jumpers at the fair, but last year I didn't have any horses to show so I decided (with a bit of prompting from my friends) to become a contestant for Orono Fair Queen." said Miss Geddes. Of course, when the fair was over, Shelley was still expected to uphold her title as queen. This meant attending attending a four-day conference conference in February at the Royal York Hotel and a couple of days at the CNE where she competed with 111 other community fair queens for the title of Miss CNE. "I had a great time," explained the local beauty, "competing at the CNE was especially glamorous with loads of photographers constantly constantly tripping over us and all the celebrities we met and presents we received from our sponsors." Now training for the tet- rathalon and returning to classes this fall, Shelley emphasizes emphasizes the fact that you don't have to be a model to enjoy all the benefits of being Orono Fair Queen. You just have to like meeting meeting people and having a good time. Photographically Speaking ... © Photo Marketing Assoc Inti. CAPTURING MOTION - is what makes this shot work. The man on the bicycle was photographed on color slide film using a 1-500 second shutter speed--fast enough to freeze his motion. Although a blurred background would have produced an artsy-looking photo, the photographer chose to use a narrow aperture to produce great dcplh-of- field--the area of acceptable focus--to include the marching band in the background as a means of setting the scene at a local parade.
