4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 28,1985 A guide to fine dining and entertainment. News and Events from Yelverton A number of recent events have received local attention and attendance from a few of our Yelverton residents. These included attendance at the Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival's 8th Annual - a very interesting display of works of art from 25 exhibitors on the wildlife theme. At least one art print found its way back to our community from the broad array of paintings, etc., displayed. This week several residents attended Kawartha Theatre's play - "No Earthly Business." Itiis play provided considerable considerable light entertainment in contrast to last week's show "The Cake Walk" which might have more appropriately appropriately been named the "Sleep Walk" - a guaranteed cure for insomnia - particularly particularly the first act. Miss Allison Lawrence, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Lawrence played the part of a rather nair-brained perpetually talking teenager with considerable enthusiasm and skill; - her political upbringing probably provided provided a certain imputus for the part. Allan and Agnes Howe had a successful garage sale this week-end in anticipation of a change of residence in the not too distant future. They have sold their farm at the summit of Bunker Hill on the Gray Line and will be moving prior to mid October. They have purchased a new home in Stouffville area. The Howes will be greatly missed in our community where they have made a great contribution, contribution, particularly Agnes in her capacity as President of the U.C.W. A carload of local fans of Willie Nelson attended the Willie Nelson show at the Exhibition grounds on Monday evening. A pleasant four hour evening of Western style music was enjoyed by around 12,000 fans. Others participating in the program were Waylon Jennings and his wife Jessie Coulter and a surprise visit by Kris Kris- tofferson. This week, your scribe and sparring partner escaped the daily routine of watching the grass grow and picking vegetables vegetables for a 3 day motor trip to Penetang, Owen Sound, Tob- iy. and Sudbury. A visit to Cor- rie's sister Mrs. Roy Werry and girls in Sudbury and an inspection of Sudbury's new Science Centre provided an enjoyable change for the norm. A pretty wedding was held at Yelverton United Church on Saturday, August 17 at 4:30 p.m. when Margaret Regan became the bride of Darrell Robinson when Canon Walter Dyer (a cousin of the groom) and Rev. John Sloan jointly officiated. The bride was given away by her brother-in- law Mr, David Welch. The groom was supported by his brother Quentin Robinson as best man. The matron of honour was Linda Marsh of Prince Albert with the bridesmaids bridesmaids being Heidi and Leslie Temple of Lindsay. The ushers for the occasion were Pat Regan and Clare Robin- soh. The little flower girl was Darrel's niece Julia Robinson Robinson and the ring bearer nephew Jeffrey Russo. Two special guests in attendance were Darrell's two grandmothers grandmothers Mrs. Etta Robinson and Mrs. Gladys Henderson. 1 i As of Monday, August 26 we will have a Beta Camera available for rental. The balance of the evening was enjoyably spent in dancing dancing to music supplied by a capable D.J.d Best wishes are extended to Darrell and Margaret for a happy married life. They will be residing we believe at Metcalfe Metcalfe near Ottawa. Around 120 guests were at the wedding reception with an addition of many more guests for the dance. A smaller than ususual turnout turnout was present on Sunday a.m. to hear Rev. John Sloan preach a very appropriate sermon on the Parable of the Builders - a building, or a church, or a life is only as good as the foundation on which it is built. The sermon was particularly particularly appropriate for our Yelverton Yelverton Church community - 3 active members of the U.C.W. which is the backbone of our Church have or will shortly be departing from the organization organization which is already very low in membership. The majority of those actively involved in our church and community are already middle aged and getting older daily. The challenge is will the younger generation get involved involved in taking leadership roles and actively participate or will they continue to look the other way and let our church go down the tubes. Our 123rd Anniversary of the original church will be held at 11 p.m. on September 15th. Reserve Thanksgiving Monday for our annual Beef Dinner as well. Future coming events in this paper will provide details. Pleased to see Rev. John Sloan's daughter Mary from Calgary, Alberta accompany him to Church on Sunday. Also welcome to Pauline and Colin Lees of Lindsay (former friends of Rev. Sloans from his Gravenhurst days to our Church service. Mrs. Anne Rockwood of Toronto was a guest this week of Mrs. Audree ' Brown for several days. Mrs. Barbara Pickett was also a visitor with Audree during the week. Miss Candy Malcolm recently returned from a two week visit to Australia and New Zealand and reports an enjoyable time. She also visited a former resident of this area - the former Margaret Margaret Stule - an old school colleague of ours. Murray Malcolm and Ann entertained several friends and relatives on Sunday to bid au revoir to Darlene (Mrs. Doug Moran) and family who are scheduled to return home to Edmonton on Monday. Marti, Jane and Dionne Malcolm spent the week-end at the Ficli cottage near Eagle Lake.
