Town's Midget All Stars Win Championship in London David Fairey, Mike Gallant and Troy Foster each had four hits over the weekend with Phil Bird getting three. A jubilant group had supper together in London then journeyed journeyed home, arriving at Memorial Park, at 9:00 p.m. Sunday night, where Sandra and Lloyd Stainton had set up a welcoming party. The team was met by relative,' Mayor Rickard, Mr. and Mrs. John James, Mr. Ron bunker and Mr. Ken Hall of the Baseball Association. Players and parents after a brief horn tooting tour through town, went to Brother's Pizza for a celebration party compliments compliments of Mayor Garnet Rickard. The life of a coach or manager is not easy if they are dedicated and sincere. It is a tremendous strain over and above actual games and practices. There is no doubt that both Dale Gallant and Bob Fairey are dedicated and sincere and the boys were their first concern. I believe all the parents appreciated this and the boys will long remember this tremendous achievement, and the two men (Dale Gallant, Bob Fairey) who made it possible. Mrs. Gallant deserves a lot of credit for her efforts in contacting the boys and keeping the records. Congratulations to the Gallants, the Faireys and all the other families who were involved. If you are a resident of the Municipality of Newcastle and see any of the people in the above picture congratulate them, they earned it, while bringing honour to Bowmanville. Bowmanville. The Town of Newcastle Midget All Stars won an Ontario championship last weekend in London and returned home Sunday night where they were received by a crowd of admirers, including Mayor Garnet Rickard. The team received a trophy for their victory and each player won a medallion. They are pictured here at Memorial Park They did it! After a year of playing "A" clubs and "D" clubs, coming out with a 500 record, the local midgets lost only one game out of six to bring the first baseball championship championship to Bowmanville in many years. The three team round-robin championship was held in London this past weekend at the Byron Complex. Bolton and Wyoming were the other two teams. The first game went at 1:00 p.m. Saturday between Bowmanville and Wyoming. During the course of the game both teams got rid of their errors for the weekend, making 7 each, accounting, for a total of 14 unearned runs." With Bowmanville as home- team and Mike Gallant on the mound, Wyoming struck for 3 runs in the first inning on two hits and a walk. Bowmanville came back on Phil Bird's crack to second base which was hobbled, Mike Knight and Mike Gallant's singled to make it 3-2. Two errors and two singles set the stage for Robertson from Wyoming who TIRE SALES INC. 676-1220 TRISUN, RADIAL 781 All SEASON 299 Dean Avt- OSHAWA m CENTRE WED. AND THURS. However, However, heart and determination paid off, as Scott Veals walked, Danny Annis singled, Bird, Knight, Fairey and Gallant all reached base due to errors, to close the gap 8-7. The third and fourth innings were uneventful with no runs being scored. Wyoming was shut down 1, 2, 3, in the top of the fifth. In the bottom, Veals flyed out, Annis and Kevin Smith walked and Phil Bird, Knight reached base on an error. Foster and Gallant followed with singles as did Webster to account for seven runs, setting the score at 14-8. Wyoming came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and Troy Foster and Mike Gallant exchanged battery roles and closed the door to the end of the seventh. Bowmanville Bowmanville came away with 14 runs on seven hits. Mike Gallant gave up seven hits, two walks and struck out 1 in 5 innings. Troy Foster walked one, struck out one and gave up no hits for the save. With a one hour break, it was back to the diamond against Bolton at 4:00 p.m. Troy Foster remained on the hill with Mike Knight catching. catching. Bolton won the toss and the right to be home team. Our lads struck quickly with Phil Bird's triple, David Fairey reaching base on a well hit ball that the centre fielder couldn't handle and Troy's single to count the first run. That score remained until the bottom of the third when Bolton Bolton used two singles, a stolen base and an error to tie the game 1-1. Bolton counted again in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off single, a passed ball and an error to go ahead 2-1. David Fairey and Troy Foster hit singles in the top of the sixth but failed to score as David was out at home on a fielder's choice. In the top of Clubhouse: front row 1-r, Kevin Smith, Mike Lug- tenburg, Mike Knight, Troy Foster, Dan Annis, Mike Gallant, Tony Bender, Phil Bird, Davie Fairey; back row, Mayor Rickard, Coach Dale Gallant, Gallant, Scott Webster, Sean Fraser, Brian Treen, Scott Veals, Mike Houston,s Asst. Coach Bob Fairey; absent, Mark Smith. Veals single to make it 3-0. the seventh, Dan Annis led off with a walk, Brian Treen flyed out to left and Danny was moved to third on Bird's single. Danny scored on Mike Knight's single sending Phil to third and David Fairy cracked out a sacrifice fly to centre field to bring in the winning run. Troy then had to face the top of Bolton's order, but got the lead-off man to fly out to second, the second batter grounded out to the pitcher and the third man grounded out to Dan Annis at short. Troy Foster gave up four hits, one base on balls and struck out eleven for the win. This was a crucial, game as it meant we. went into Sunday undefeated; and would have to be beaten twice by a team in order for them to win. Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. Wyoming defeated Bolton 3-2 to advance on to be Bowmanville's opposition at 2:00 p.m. Because this game was a possible championship game it was nine innings. Mike Gallant once again took the mound and we were visiting team. We scored early with Phil Bird's walk and David Fairey's single to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Our boys added two more in the third with Brian Treen's single, Phil reaching on a fielder's choice forcing out Brian, David Fairey reaching on a base on balls and Scott Mike Gallant's lead off double, Foster's fielder's choice and Treen's R.B.I. single made it 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth Wyoming put together three hits but good defense and control pitching kept them off the score board. We chalked up one more in the seventh on Bird's walk plus a stolen base and Fairy's single. Once again in the bottom of the seventh, Wyoming rapped out three hits, scoring one run - this time before the fire was put out. Wyoming chalked up another run in the eighth on a triple and a passed ball. A miraculous finish was set up when Wyoming's lead off man reached base on an error. The next batter hit a fly to short left field where Brian Treen dove and seemed to catch it, however the umpire waved it safe (no catch). Brian scrambled up, fired it to second to force the runner'out and Mike Knight threw to first where the runner thought the ball was caught and didn't run it out (double play). The last batter, then lined out to Scott Webster in right field. Mike Gallant pitched a superb game, allowing 2 runs on 9 hits, one intentional walk and struck out 4. David Fairey was the key hitter with 3 singles, while Brian Treen had two. Annis, Foster and Scott Veals added singles. Mike Gallant contributed a double.
