Garnet Rickard has had a lifelong career in local government. He first served as a trustee for the Darlington Darlington Township school area board, later becoming a Darlington Township councillor. He was reeve of Darlington Township four years and deputy reeve for five. He is a former warden of Northumberland and Durham Counties. The Newcastle mayor has been a member of the Association of Municipalities Municipalities of Ontario's board of directors, directors, serving as the group's culture culture and recreation committee chairman. He is past president of the Canadian Canadian Seed Growers' Association and was a member of the University of Guelph board of directors for 10 years. In 1982, he became a member of the Order of Canada. "I've lived in the community all my life and I think I know all the corners of the area," Mayor Rickard said. Mr. Cureatz said he has selected Grossman because he feels that he would be more effective in the party's present opposition role. The decision was made after Mr. Cureatz consulted with his riding association and talked with candidate candidate Dennis Timbrell. Mr. Cureatz backed Timbrell in the convention held last January.
