Concern Growing Over Pollution inWaterSupply "Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink." Many people believe that our drinking water is less than perfect, but some health experts consider the poisoning of our water the major public health threat of our time. About 30 people gathered in the Oddfellows Hall in Bowmanville on September 17th to discuss the problem of contaminants in the drinking water supply, whether from a communal water system or from individual individual wells. Members of the general public and local politicians had been invited to the meeting by Karen Allin. Mrs. Allin is associated with Forever Living Products, Products, a company that manufactures manufactures a water, purification purification system for the home. "We all think there's a problem with our water, but what to do about it," said Mrs. Allin. While scientists try to deal with the worldwide problem of water pollution, a water purification system installed at home can insure insure that the individual's water supply is safe. There are a number of different different methods used to purify water: chlorination, distillation, reverse osmosis, osmosis, and carbon filtering, to name a few. When water is distilled the end result is often that the chemicals in the water become concentrated concentrated rather than removed. Chlorination can lead to more problems than it solves solves also. When chlorine combines with some of the chemicals found in the water supply, it can create even more harmful substances. substances. The best, and most advanced advanced method of water purification is reverse osmosis. osmosis. An information sheet handed out at the meeting explains reverse osmosis as follows: "A fine membrane allows only small pure water molecules to pass through but virtually virtually all pollutants (nitrates, heavy metals and salts, radioactive materials, chemical fertilizers, bacteria bacteria and viruses, carcinogenic carcinogenic by-products of chlorination an industrial wastes) are too large to penetrate penetrate through the membrane." membrane." Mrs. Allin uses the ChaR/ O 2000 Clean Water System which combines reverse osmosis osmosis with a two part carbon' carbon' filter. It runs on the pressure from the faucet to which it is attached and is easy to install. Both Mrs. Allin and June Heard from Orono are eager to show residents of the Newcastle area the benefits benefits of this water purification purification system and would welcome welcome your call. In Bowmanville, call Karen Allin at 263-8885; and in Orono, call June Heard at 983-5169.
