Lords Off to Good Start First Date of Publication: September 25th, 1985. Durham College Varsity Athletic teams are off to another fine start in O.C.A.A. competition. The Women's Softball team, who are defending chmapions the past three years, are continuing their winning fashion. Pitchers Justine Black and Laurie Thompson have combined for four victories in the teams first six games, which included exhibition and league play. Hornsby, who plays shortstop, leads the team with 11 R.B.I.'s, 3 triples and 1 home run, which leaves her with a batting average of .391. Elaine Ervine, a native native of Tweed, Ontario, has proved to be a very versatile performer. Sandra Napper, a veteran to the squad is off to her best start with a .411 average. Presently the team is tied for first place with Loyalist College of Belleville. Belleville. The Men's Soccer team is going to be a team to contend contend with. They have defeated defeated Sir Sandford Fleming Fleming College of Peterborough by a score of 2-1 in Peterborough Peterborough on Wednesday, September 25th. Three Durham players, Mario Bruno, Conrad Philips and Tony Rizzuto lead the O.C.A.A. scoring race with 3 goals each in the three games played. Coach Vaso Vujanovic is very optimistic about the season, but adds "we will play one game at a time." The "Lords" hope to improve on lastyear's silver medal. Minor Hockey's top award, the O.M.H.A. Honour Award, for outstanding service to minor hockey, was presented Saturday, September 28th, to Charles Drake, Trenton, Ontario. The announcement and presentation of the award to Mr. Drake was made at the luncheon following the 52nd Annual Meeting of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association. Mr. Drake, long associated with minor hockey in Trenton becomes the thirty-eighth winner of the award. The last ten previous winners were Hugh Hall, Plattsville; James Hamilton, Burlington; Glen Ure, Ridgetown; Sam Brereton, Newcastle; Frank Simpson, Brighton; Lome Spicer, Shedden; At Shaw, Windsor; Albert Schram, Dunnville; George Bibby, Campbellford; Ronald J. McKnight, Acton. Charles Drake, Trenton On behalf of the Trenton Minor Hockey Association, I would like to nominate Charles Drake for the O.M.H.A. Honour Award. Charles Drake started coaching coaching Minor Hockey in 1950 and is still coaching today - 34 years later. During those 34 years whenever a team found themselves without a coach for a game or for a full year, Charlie was always there and would fill in for the game; for the year; or for as long as he was needed. This occurred during 1961 and 1962 in the Midget "AA" Series. Trenton was a runner-up against Wallaceburg and at the last minute the team found themselves without a coach. This could have been a serious problem elsewhere but not in Trenton; they simply contacted contacted Charlie Drake and the team had their coach. In 1963 and 1964 the coach for the Trenton Juveniles, a member of the armed forces, was sent, on course leaving that team without a coach. Charlie Drake filled in again and the team won the Juvenile "AA" Championship Series. MERVYN B. During all the years of coaching Minor Hockey, Charlie Charlie Drake has never accepted free transportation to any games but has paid his own way and has transported any of the team members who needed a ride. Charles Drake is 68 years of age and has worked for the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton for 23 years. This man has dedicated his whole life to sports and young people and there are very few hockey or ball players in the Trenton area who have not been in contact with him over the years.
