St. Marys Midgets Off to Good Start Due to the fact that there is no juvenile team in Bowmanville Bowmanville this year, the Major Midgets have adopted St. Marys Cement plant as their sponsor. Approximately thirty-four boys initially tried out for the team, four of these being goal- tenders. After two active work-outs and two exhibition games. The number was reduced to fourteen plus two goal-tenders. The current forwards are: Paul Stainton (three), Scott Page (seven), John Romano (eight), Glen Campbell (nine), Mike Gallant (eleven), George Pithie (twelve), Kelly Balson (fourteen) and Chris Shmyr (seventeen). Holding down defense positions at the present present time are: Dave Tuepah (two), Bob McArthur (four), Shawn Rekker (five), Jamie Downing (six), and Larry Perris (ten). Goal-tending positions are held by David Smith (one), and Scott Webster (thirty). The coaching and managing staff is comprised of Harvey Webster, Ralph Cryderman and Werner Wailraff. The midget club would like to congratulate four of their former teammates, Chris Beck and Brian Noble for making the Oshawa Legionnaires Legionnaires and Jamie Lever and Kelly Armstrong who cracked the Junior C lineup with the Eagles. We wish all four the best of luck in all their future endeavours. The past week with team selecting made the Midget club participated in three exhibition games, last Sunday in Peterborough against their AAA Majors, Tuesday in Pickering with their AA Majors and Wednesday at Darlington against Port Perry's Major Club. In Peterborough last Sunday, the Toros stuck with the free-wheeling Lift-Lock City team and came away on the short end of an 8 - 4 score. Our boys should be commended commended on the effort and desire they put into their play. John Romano, Scott Page scored singles while David Fairey notched two. Assists went to Kelly Balson (two), Mike Gallant, Larry Perris and Paul Stainton. Scott Webster and David Smith shared the net-minding duties, making some excellent saves but were helpless on most scoring plays as the quick "Petes" broke in alone. On Tuesday, the St. Marys Merry Makers Huisman 8201 pinfall, 12 points ; Junkin 8338,10; Smith 8291, 7; Etcher 8268, 6; Roberts 8040, 5; Bullock 7672, 2. High Single - C. Roberts 264. High Double - C. Roberts 502 (238, 264). Top Averages R. Junkin 207, C. Roberts 206, G. Smith 201, M. Huisman 196, V. Murphy 195, F. Bullock 186. Toros edged Pickering in a hard working come-from- behind victory. After being down 2 - 0 early, Mike Gallant notched one from George Pithie. Kelly Balson tied the game from Gallant and Pithie. Pickering again took the lead but Larry Perris evened it on passes from Gallant and Pithie. Pickering came back with two near the end of the second period, but with 34 seconds remaining David Fairey was sent in alone on alert passing by Shawn Rekker to bring the Toros within one. After a few quiet words on the penalty situation our boys cruised through the third scoring scoring four times and only taking one penalty. Three consecutive consecutive goals were scored by George Pithie on set-ups by Shawn Rekker, Glen Campbell, Campbell, Mike Gallant (two), and Jamie Downing (two). Pickering tallied once before the closing goal was scored by Bob McArthur on a picture play. With Pickering having an extra attacker for their goaltender, Chris Shmyr won the draw in our end and Bob sent a full-length shot into the open net. Once again Smith and Webster shared the duties in net. The St. Marys Toros got off on the right foot in their first home game on Wednesday night by topping Port Perry 8 - 4. Goal scorers in this one were: Glen Campbell with two, and singles by Shmyr, McArthur, Pithie, Romano, Gallant and Balson. Kelly notched three assists, while Mike Gallant, Dave Tuepah and Jamie Downing had two each and John Romano, Bob McArthur, Chris Shmyr, Paul Stainton and David Fairey each assisted on one. Both David and Scott picked two pucks out of the net in sharing the duties. The team's supporters should be pleased with their hard work, free passing and continuous skating. If they continue to give their best in practice we will get the most out of the games. We travelled to Lindsay Sunday, October 6th and are home to Pickering Wednesday, Wednesday, October9 at 9:00 p.m. We would appreciate your encouraging and positive support.
