Last Christmas, M. A. Sleep, Liberty St., received a huge potato, part of a gift parcel from his daughter in British Columbia. Instead of eating the giant, he planted it this spring and recently dug up 11 quarts of spuds. That is what you might call investing in the soil and getting good returns. One of the most attractive changes which has been made along Bowmanville Shopping Section is almost complete at Fred Kramp's Furniture store. The former Morris Funeral Chapel front has been removed and replaced with glass, which gives window shoppers an excellent view of the interior of that portion of the store, It was hoped to be ready for the grand opening this week, but there is still some work to be done around the main door before everything everything will be ready. Lyall Crabb, popular local manager of the Walker Stores for the past four years, has purchased a grocery business in his home town, Simcoe, and left on Tuesday to take over his new business. "Cowboy A. D. Kean did a John Gilpin from Mimico to his farm near Bowmanville the other day only instead of riding the steed, which happened to be a donkey, he took it with him in his car. Kean's car is a coach and. he managed by barricading the windows and tying the donkey's head to his shoulder as he drove the car. How he got the beast in, remains a mystery. Both unique and delightfully presented was the address on Friday by Col. Frank Chappell, Chappell, Public Relations Director of General Motors, Oshawa, at the Bowmanville Rotary Club. Col. Chappell made his address both educational and amusing. He was introduced by Rotarian Roes Strike and he spoke on the subject "Words and Phrases common in the English language." Six men were standing in the Community Hall at Newcastle Newcastle while the vote was being counted on Monday, they were Liberals for the federal election in Durham County. One suggested 20 majority for Rickard, another 40, and one ventured even 60. Frank Rickard was one of the six, and he ventured to suggest 125. Told that he was too optimistic he reduced his guess to 120 majority, and Newcastle gave its former Reeve 119 majority. Bowmanville. This concert has been planned as part of the church's 150th anniversary celebrations and will begin at 11:00 a.m., replacing -the normal morning service. The Toronto Children's Chorus was founded in 1978 by its Music Director Jean Ashworth Ashworth Bartle with the single aspiration of "becoming one of the finest children's choirs in the world." Since then, the choir has established itself as a polished and versatile ensemble achieving excellence excellence in its performances, tours, recordings, competitions competitions and workshops. The choir is comprised of about 90 voices and the children range in age from nine to sixteen years, group of about 50 voices, chosen from the choir. The Toronto Children's Chorus has toured In Europe and has been enthusiastically received bv critics both at home and abroad. The choir has been a first place winner in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales and it has also been awarded prizes in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs as the best children's chorus and for the best performance performance of a Canadian work. During the summer of 1986, the choir will tour Western Canada and perform at Expo '86. Jean Ashworth Bartle's remarkable gift for achieving high artistic standards of excellence with various children's choirs of all ages is recognized throughout Norjth America and Europe. Mrs. Bartle, an honour graduate of the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory Conservatory of Music, is the recipient of two Choral Conducting Scholarships: the 1977 Leslie Bell Scholarship and the 1982 Sir Ernest MacMillan Scholarship. She has also studied at Westminister Westminister Choir College in Princeton, Princeton, and with such luminaries as Margaret Hillis and Sir David Willcocks. Her work has been highly commended by international artists such as Andrew Davis, Maureen Forrester," Elmer Iseler and Robert Shaw. Mrs. Bartle's talent for training children's choirs has set unprecedented standards of musicianship which she continues to develop at Howard Public School and Kingsway-Lambton United Church, (winner of the Mathieson Trophy - 1984) in Toronto. Her total devotion and commitment to the choral art and uncompromising attention to musical detail with her school, church, and professional children's choirs has become the standard to which others aspire. Ruth Watson Henderson, accompanist, is a graduate of the Royal College of Music and the Mannes College of Music, New York. Mrs. Henderson has been accompanist accompanist for the Festival Singers of Canada, the Ontario Youth Choir, and is currently the regular accompanist of the Toronto Children's Chorus. She is also a teacher and recitalist and has an international international reputation as one of Canada's outstanding composers. There is'no admission charge for this concert.
