News Yelverton U.C.W. met Oct. 3 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Staples, Orono. Mrs. Howard Malcolm presided, as our President Agnes Howe is in the act of moving. We opened with the Ode. Mrs. Balfour Moore took the devotional on "Thankfulness". Following the scripture reading, she stressed the importance of ■ gratitude and how seldom we take time to say "thanks". We are often like the ten lepers when only one took time to express thanks. Let us resolve to be that one in ten. Mary read a poem on "Thanksgiving". We sang the hymn "Come ye thankful people come", followed by prayer. Eleven members answered the roll call with . some lovely bazaar items to be sold at our Beef Dinner on Oct. 14th. The treasurer's report and the flower report were given. Our group cleared $359 at Mrs. Audrie Brown's sale. Some members handed in money toward the bazaar. Mrs. Art Rowen reported on Region 5 Rally held Oct. 2nd at Janetville when our group presented the Dev. and Mrs. Howard Malcolm acted as "Joe" in the skit. Thank you was read from Mr. Ralph Pfoh for plant received. It was decided to support some of our young people financially to attend the Alpha in Toronto in December, moved by Mrs. Norman Wilson and 2nd by Mrs. Ted Spencely that Mrs. Hazel Gray be reimbursed for the Sunday School books. Mrs. Balfour Moore gave the report for work at the Beef Dinner plus the suggested baking list. Moved by Mrs. Ralph Pfoh vend 2nd by Mrs. Mary Moore that our meeting on Nov. 7th be held at 10:30 a.m. at the church with the hope that some younger ones will join us. We plan to have lunch at Port Perry at 12:30 p.m. and later have a demonstration tour of Paula Lishman's Ltd., Blackstock. Following the benediction, Mrs. Ralph. Pfoh gave readings and history of the Canadian Thanksgiving. A delicious lunch was served by our hostess and Mrs. Hazel Gray, Mrs. Howard Malcolm and Mrs. Art Rowan. Later the ladies priced the many bazaar items. Mrs. Audrie Brown donated many cook books for the bazaar and tea towels for church use, much appreciated. To most of us, smiling is à natural reaction... a smile just happens! To others less fortunate in our communities, suffering, distress and loneliness hide their smiles.
