The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 6.1985 11 Yelverton Marks Hallowe'en YELVERTON NEWS On Tuesday evening Mrs. Mandy Robinson was tendered tendered a miscellaneous shower somewhat after the fact as it were, at the home of Laurie and Clara Robinson. Mandy was the recipient of many lovely gifts including towels by the dozen. If this is any indication of things to come, Quentin and Mandy will be the cleanest folks in town. Mandy expressed her thanks for the gifts and for the manner in which she, as a stranger from Michigan, U.S.A., has been welcomed into our Yelverton community. Based on her participation to date, she will indeed be a welcome addition to it. Hallowe'en celebrations have been going on and off all week with quite a collection of indescribable costumes making their appearance at various events during the week. There were a few in fact, that showed some slight improvement over the originals. A number from this community community attended the Bethany United Church turkey supper on Friday and most, if not all, suffered from one chronic complaint- "overeating." The meal was delicious and the desserts equally so. Even the time waiting for one's turn to eat was rendered less boring by organ music supplied by Mr. Les Fairhurst. A number from this area also attended the sale of Mary and Larry Mackie's in Black- stock, on Saturday afternoon. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Bruce McGill of Bethany who will be observing their 50th wedding anniversary this week. Misses Candy Malcolm and Marleah Bowen, Jane and Marti Malcolm attended a masquerade party hosted by Miss Kathy Burns at her Lindsay apartment held for her former high school buddies on Friday evening. With Municipal elections slightly less than one week away, the campaign here in Manvers from what we have seen of it, is somewhere between somnolent and comatose. The Candidates Night in Bethany had a nominal attendance attendance of fifty or sixty we're told. The council elect will have a minimum of two new faces and we shall have a new face at County Council from the Ballyduff area. We're safe there since both ' Jim and Barry live in Ballyduff Ballyduff area. It is somewhat disappointing that not one candidate from Manvers offered their services for the Victoria County School Board. With more than half our David W. Oakes, A.M.C.T. Clerk Town of Newcastle 40 Temperance Street Bowmanville, Ontario Our File: 10.50.8 municipal taxes going to education, one would wrongfully wrongfully presume that considerable considerable interest might be shown in this area. Lethargy has apparently set in locally as both our representatives are now in the Omemee - Emily area and by acclamation. We follow with interest the contest in neighboring municipalities. It would appear that in almost every area there is a "penny- pincher" who accuses the opposition of being rash, extravagant and non responsive responsive to the ratepayers' needs. The pressure groups are out in full force, trying to improve their slanted views not only on the candidates but also on the ratepayers. We urge all to get out to vote as it is their democratic privilege as well as responsibility - whether it be for a superior candidate or conversely the best qf two or more hopeless candidates.
