Many from Orono areas attended and participated in the recent "Music Night" in Bowmanville High School. Historical Plaque Unveiled On Sunday, Nov. 3, prior to the unveiling of the Historical Plaque to honor Sir Ambrose Stanton, the members of the Board of Clarke Museum and Archives gathered for a noon luncheon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Derek Barnett. Special guests included Mrs, Mary Clark and Mrs. Ruth McGill, nieces of Dr. Stanton, as • well as other family members. Also attending were curator Miss Dyana Layng and Mrs. J. Layng and representatives from the Ontario Heritage Foundation all attended the ceremony held at 2 p.m. at the Old Kirby Schoolhouse. Alumni Award On Tuesday, Oct. 29, fifteen students from across the province received the coveted "Alumni Award" of $2400, spread over a period of time, from the University of Guelph. Along with the award each student received a beautiful book, "College on The Hill", a history of the College, from- 1874-1974. Mr. and Mrs. Cor. Mostert, Orono, attended the award ceremonies, to see their son Arnold receive the coveted award. Kirby Church Bazaar and News ' Mrs. Inez Harris welcomed the large crowd on hand, on Saturday, Nov. 2, in Orono United Church main hall, for the annual luncheon and bazaar, sponsored by Kirby U.C.W. Of course the bake sale tables were mouth-watering, with delicious cakes, pies, cookies, etc. and the craft sale •tables were loaded with doll i clothes, mitts, hats, socks, etc. Doreen Lowery was kept busy with many plants, seeds, etc. The dining room was very attractive with fresh flowers and pretty relish trays. The excellent luncheon menu consisted of potato, cabbage salads, assorted sandwiches and sweets. Well over $700.00 was realized from this fine effort. Mrs. Diane Hamre drew the winning lucky ticket, for the pretty child's sweater, and the winner was Carman Hurren, Oshawa. Saturday afternoon callers with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Harris, were Mrs. Helen McMillan, Weston and her niece Beth Hickerson, Kitchener. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reid, Kirby have been enjoying a fall holiday and his mother, Mrs. Grace Reid, Newcastle, has been in charge of the family affairs. St. Saviours Church News Memorial flowers on the altar at St. Saviours on Sunday morning, are to the glory of God and in loving memory of Mrs. Gertrude Sawyer, and placed there by her family. St, Saviours Orono A.C.W. met on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at the home of Sandra Anderson. The ladies were instructed on how to make corn husk wreaths for Christmas. Club Bazaar Held in the club hall on Station Street, Orono, with an excellent crowd in attendance. Councillor Diane Hamre officially opened the event and welcomed the crowd. Of course the featured tables were penny sale, excellent crafts and the tempting bake tables. Isabelle MacGregor was the really "big" winner of the day as she won the large hamper of groceries, and also the pretty tablecloth. (Lucky Isabelle!) Mr. Reg. Langley, Newcastle, won the very pretty afghan. Altogether a very well attended and successful event. Orono United Church News C.G.I.T. Hallowe'en Party Held Saturday afternoon, Oct. 26, in Orono Church main hall with a good attendance of 25 - 30 girls in very cute costumes. The parents of the members donated the prizes and Mrs. Marion Milnes and daughter Cathy had the task of picking the winners. Our C.G.I.T. club is brand new this year and we meet every Thursday night at 6 p.m. in upstairs C.E. rooms. Our leaders are Mrs. Lynn Finlay and assistant leader, Mrs. Betty Colvin. All girls from 11 years to 16 are welcome to join us anytime. Rev. Milnes gave the children's story on Sunday morning and led the children and congregation in a lively sing-song. Explorers Club News The Explorers held their initiation ceremony in October and welcomed 10 new members. The new girls are continuing their booklets on "Becoming an explorer and the second, third and fourth girls are still working on their books "Superwomen of the Bible." The club held a fun evening celebrating Hallowe'en last week, with games and refreshments. Prizes for best costumes - 1st year - Heather Simpson, 2nd year - Katrina Kent, 3rd year and 4th year - Michelle Ross, Best overall costume - Janet Reader. With just two weeks to go, the United Way had reached 71 per cent of its objective and was approaching the $1.4 million mark.
