i 8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 20,1985 Section Two Queen's By Sam Park Report Cureatz M.P.P. A YWCA Offers '86 Programs By 1988, according to a recent announcement by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, GO-Train service will be operating from an interim terminal station on Brock Street in Whitby. This announcement is the result of a review of GO service to our area that began under the Miller government. Because of the costs involved, the Provincial Government will not be using the newly-designed GO-ALRT transit for the Whitby run, but conventional railway trains with double-decker, or bilevel, bilevel, coaches. A provincially- owned rail line will be built between Pickering and Whitby to allow for full train service on ground already prepared for the proposed GO- ALRT route. GO-trains running between Pickering and Toronto must use lines owned by the CNR and the CPR, and must pay rent to these two railways. By having a fully provincially- owned rail line between Pickering and Whitby, these rental fees can be avoided. While construction of the line is proceeding, studies will be carried out to discover the best route for extending GO rails beyond Whitby, Environmental Environmental approval, as well as input from local government government and the public, will be sought during this study. As well, Queen's Park will negotiate with General Motors Diesel in London and Rail- Trans in Thunder Bay to build more locomotives and bi-level rail cars to provide for the expanded service. While definite plans for GO-transit into the Durham area is welcome news, I am not as satisfied with the response I received from the Minister of Industry and Trade, Hugh O'Neill, to a letter I wrote in August. I proposed that a select committee of the Legislature be organized to look into the challenge that new technologies technologies pose in the workplace. workplace. The Minister replied that previous Progressive Conservative administrations had set up a working group jointly chaired by William Boggs and Bob White to look into technological change. While I have great respect for the abilities of both Boggs and White, I do not think an internal working group within the provincial public service will do the job I think needs to be done. New technologies are shaking up the job market. People are concerned about their jobs and contractors and jobbers are concerned about future business. A select committee of the Legislature could study this issue fully in the public eye - raising concerns and hearing a variety of views. This exercise would be a good education, not only for MPP's, but for the public id this important issue. I hope the Minister will change his mind and authorize the creation of a select committee to look into technology technology and the workplace. The Minister of Citizenship and Culture has launched a new volunteer award program to say a public thank you to the many hardworking Ontario volunteers, organizations and businesses who have helped to enrich the lives of their communities and fellow citizens. Nominations for the volunteer service awards and forms may be obtained by contacting Marilyn Branch who is the Co-ordinator of the program at 416 (965-7505). GRIEF AND GUILT 1 II is normal and healthy lor : people to grieve alter the loss of a loved one. It has been said, In fact, that grief and love are two sides of the same ■ coin. The more one cares 1 about another, the more deeply the loss will be felt. ... Feelings of guilt, on the other hand, are more likely to be unhealthy, though they are , not at all uncommon. The ' closer the human relationship, the more chance there Is for guilt to be at least part of the response. A child may have resisted the authority ol a parent, even wished the parent dead. A parent may be haunted by thoughts of having failed to protect the, child from Illness or accident. A sibling may feel guilty simply for being alive. There is no easy answer. Many people who are troubled by overwhelming feelings of guilt find it useful to work these out wHâ «-clergyman or counselor.
