Christmas Sale Held at Orono Town Hall Cullen Gardens Displays Christmas Light Festival Watercolour Show at Visual Arts Centre Last weekend, exhibitors came not only from Orono and surrounding area but from as far as Toronto to the Christmas Craft Sale at Orono Town Hall. Hundreds of school buses, filled with excited children are coming to Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village to enjoy the 1985 version of the annual Christmas. Light Festival. The Christmas Festival has been a favourite of school children coming back every year from schools in Scarborough, Toronto and Durham Region. Following a special greeting at the new Gatehouse, they see a miniature Santa Claus Parade winding down main street, a house with a fire in the roof, and homes and farms decorated for the holiday season. A nativity scene depicting the Christmas Story, with Wise Men and Shepherds accompanied by live animals. A new historical feature represents a Christmas tableau of the 1600's as performed by Huron Indians. When the children depart, and the late afternoon sun sets in the west a real transformation takes place, with thousands of sparkling lights on trees and shrubs. Hundreds of coloured floodlights illuminating the valley's cedar groves, covered bridges and romantic walkways. The exhibition begins Friday, at 7:30 p.m. and continues to Sunday, December 1, from one to four p.m. Both artists are popular exhibitors at the Visual Arts Centre juried competitions and their work is found in many collections. A show of watercolors and serigraphs will open this Friday, November 22, at the Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville. The exhibition by painter Don Staples, of Orono, and serigraph artist Charles Cooper, of Oshawa will open at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and continue until December December 1 each afternoon from one to four p.m. Don Staples, an Orono farmer and former aeronautical engineer, will be bringing to the public some new watercolor landscapes landscapes which feature special special attention to skies. Painting is strictly a pastime pastime for Don Staples, but he has had a number of successful successful shows and is a popular popular exhibitor at displays sponsored by the Visual Arts Centre and other galleries. galleries. His work consists of landscapes from around his home and in Northern Ontario. Ontario. Mr. Cooper developed an interest in the serigraph (screenprint) technique as the result of a background as a photographer. Screenprinting is an intricate intricate process which may require 50 to 60 hours of work for screening alone. Charles Cooper's serig-., raphs include chiefly landscapes landscapes and buildings from the Durham Region along with other interesting images images drawn from his travels thoughout Canada. A single edition usually consists of no more than 10 prints.
