As well as dealing with the reports of the various standing committees, a few controversial controversial resolutions, they had various guest speakers present. Among these were the Hon. Donald McDonald, Chairman of the McDonald Commission, who presented a resume of this report as it affected the agricultural industry. The 1,000 or so delegates present did not accept all of Mr. McDonald's comments at face value and on several occasions voiced their objections with boos and catcalls. Perhaps Mr. McDonald's comments did more to arouse delegates from their lethargy and stimulate a deep discussion and develop a more unified voice for agriculture than anything else on program. Mr. Evereth Beggs provided an address that was much more conciliatory to the farm opinion. .Only three Ontario Cabinet Ministers showed up for-the Ministers breakfast - Treasurer Nixon, Min. of Ag. Jack Peddell and Sweeney. Ech of these Ministers commented on the activities of the new provincial govt. Treasurer Nixon's comment that the 1 percent of the Ontario budget in the past spent in the Agricultural sector was insufficient and had already been boosted by 20 percent, brought a round of applause. All the current O.F.A. executive - the President and both V.P.'s were returned to office and three out of the four other members also were returned, All in all it was one of the best conventions that O.F.A. had held for several years and "goes to show ya" that when the going gets tough, the toiigh get going. It was our pleasure to attend the annual meeting of the Foxboro branch of U.C.O. held on Thursday p.m. at the Sun Valley Motel in Belleville. Several representatives of local Co-op stores attended the annual purchasing seminar held this week at the Constellation Constellation Hotel on the Strip. Lindsay area reps, included John Geelan, Morley Brown, John Houghton and Marti Malcolm. Mr. George May U.C.O.'s C.E.O. was the guest speaker at their banquet. The Canadian Pork Council met on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week at the Park Plaza Hotel in Toronto and were hosted Wednesday evening by the Ontario Pork producers. Mr. Howard Malcolm turned over the mantle of office of Chairman to his successor Mr. Bill Boggs of Manitoba. Howard will continue to be a member of the Executive for the coming year. On Saturday evening it was our pleasure along with a number of fellow Directors of Lindsay Branch of U.C.O. and their wives to be invited to attend the annual Christmas party (dinner and dance) held at the Lindsay Golf and Country Club of the employees of Lindsay, Beaverton, Woodville and Fenelon Falls. Following a delicious roast beef dinner, Santa made his appearance and with the assistance of his helpers distributed a number of gifts to various employees. This was no ordinary visit by Santa and no ordinary Santa either. This rotund fellow, who bore an uncanny resemblance to a certain chubby Fenelon Falls Co-op manager was a master of the sharp retort and witty innuendo as he and his cheery elf Mary Ann distributed a wide range of nameless articles to their victims, eg. special brushes and combs for bald headed men, etc. Following Following this period of unbridled rivalry, the balance of the evening was spent in dancing to a local D. J. Quite a pleasant . evening. On Saturday Mrs. Hazel Gray moved her household items to her new home at Honey Beach, north of Port Perry and has taken up residence there. Pleased to report that Mr. Frank Glasbergen Sr. of Orono managed to survive an acute heart attack on Friday of this week and at one time was almost given up by his doctor. Happy to hear that he is currently much improved. On Saturday evening we were fortunate in winning a door prize at the Co-op X-mas party. The prize was a particularly particularly welcome one - a bird feeder with a bag of bird feed. The gift was particularly appreciated because this past week we have had swarms of birds drop in for a free lunch at our bird feeders. These included his and her sets of Nuthatches, Downy and hairy Woodpeckers, 10 Bluejays and up to 3' dozen Evening Grosbeeks at one time, These pretty feathered friends sure help alleviate the drabness of our November dull days. I guess we can't argue that Malconia is for the birds, literally at least.
