Friends Celebrate 80th Born at Haydon on Nov. 22, 1905, to Ethel and Elias Ashton, Reta Rodman (Ashton) has had a gaiety week of surprise celebrations for her "special birthday." A group of Scugog Island U.C.W. members of which Reta is a life member and still active, took her, and her sister Maudie Travell to a luncheon at the Magic Car, Oshawa. In the afternoon one of the members read a memorandum memorandum of her 59 years with them, and her endeavors with the young people and social work in the community, and presented her with a pretty silk hand-painted scarf. On Saturday afternoon, Nov. 23rd, an "Open House" planned by nieces Janice Fanning and Bonnie Beech and assisted by other family members, was held at the home of Gordon and Alice Beech in Bowmanville, where Reta had many pleasant surprises. Attending were old friends, relatives, some members of Simcoe St. U.C.W. of which she has been a member since living in Oshawa for the past 24 years, the Senior Citizens Choir, and a group from Scugog U.C.W. where she spent so many happy years. During the afternoon, telephone calls came from friends at Sundridge who were unable to come and telegrams arrived from Toronto and one from her nephew in Ottawa. Bill May sent his regrets; In the evening nieces and nephews gathered for a jovial party. Cameras were busy and time spent reminiscing of times spent with her and Uncle Stewart over the past years. Nearing the end of the evening a call came from nephew Ivan Dusty from California, to send best wishes. Several others not able to attend were Larry and Evelyn Ashton and Allen and Ivy Bragg. To end the party while the cake was being cut, Douglas Ashton took video pictures as all sang Happy Birthday. Besides the over 200 guests that attended, she has some smaller great nieces and nephews who protested, and they have decided they are going to have their own party for just them and Aunt Reta who always has candy and a full cookie jar for them. We think it might be at McDonalds. V V / ■ . ' V X i / / x • . \ hêw ^||W ÆS ibik  w V:m Xi-.i n su/ "■X W v X- >.
