Bowmnnville, December 4, 1985 New Members Welcomed to Beaver Colony On Thursday, Nov. 28th, 4th Bowmanville Beavers acquired seven new members and two new leaders, gathered here around their mascot. They are, front row, 1-r, Tom Jones, Colin MacDonald; middle row, Jake Davies, Mark Gendron, Dustin Forsey, Derek Topham, Brett Forsey; new leaders Bev Austin and Jim Topham. They meet at Memorial Park clubhouse. Vincent Massey News The safety of our students is very important so at Vincent Massey we have a safety patroller program. Pupils in grades 5 and 6 volunteer to be patrollers. Two are on duty at each of the three locations before school, at noon, and after school. Mrs. Avery is in charge of the program and helps to ensure that they are doing their job in a responsible way. Our captain is Shawn Greenley and the sub-captain is Leslie Adams. During the winter the patrollers have hot chocolate to help warm them up when they come back from their locations. The best patroller of the year receives a plaque and represents the school at a Jamboree in Oshawa for the top patrollers of the province. All the classes attended the dedication dedication at 11:00 a.m. We heard from former Mayor Garnet Rickard as he told the history of the bell and rang it for the first time since the school was closed. Students whose parents had attended Shaw's School had a chance to ring the bell too. Mrs. Gail Rickard and Mrs. Sally Barrie helped to organize this, successful dedication. After welcome by the chairman, the minutes were read and approved and the treasurer's report given. Everyone commented on the windbreak construction on the north of the hall and said it made a difference when the last card party was held. As requested, a budget was drawn up for the next five years and this was completed by Wallace Boughen with the help of Diane Hamre on Saturday. For the last card party before Christmas on Dec. 6 th, Berneice Milligan and Lena Clysdale would be at the door. Doris Tompkins agreed to look after special prizes for this evening. In future money to continue as prizes for the New Year. Mr. Bill Henderson returned on Tuesday after spending a week with his family at Lethbridge. The Women's Institute will meet next Tuesday, December 10th at Port Hope Legion at 12 o'clock for their Christmas meal. The meeting will be held afterwards with a short program and an exchange of a $2.00 gift at the home of Mrs. Esmee Goldie. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Henderson Henderson with Mr. and Mrs. Bev Henderson of Port Hope toured the Cullen Barns, Toronto, on Friday. The U.C.W. held their monthly meeting on Wednesday evening with 14 present. Janet Paeden and Phyllis Peck led in the Devotional. The purpose was repeated in unison and the secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting. Future plans were made regarding catering to the three weddings next year. Presenting life memberhsip pins were also discussed. The kitchen decorating would be done in the spring. The treasurer's report was given as well as the report of the Bazaar. The slate of officers to remain nearly the same as last year with Dorothy Stapleton agreeing to act as 1st vice president. The Christmas meeting will be pot luck beginning at six-thirty. All ladies of the church are invited on Wednesday, December 18th with an exchange of a $2.00 gift. The committee served lunch and all enjoyed the socialable time. Mr. and Mrs. Trueman Henderson visited Saturday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Leudke. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nesbitt of Columbus were dinner guests on Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Farrow. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Best of Wesleyville were callers on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Maurice O'Neill. Church greeters were Wallace and Inez Boughen with each receiving an envelope for the White Gift service next Sunday morning. Practice for this on Wednesday Wednesday evening. The Newtonville Hall was decorated beautifully on Thursday evening by Mrs. Donna Morris for her Christmas Christmas display of Avon products. Mrs. Mary Skelding was the hostess and all sat down to card tables for their pot luck luncheon. Over 60 ladies attended. After the meal a program followed which included musical numbers on the piano by Jan Carr and solos by Cheryl Reid, a demonstration on applying make-up and another gave part of her life history. Prizes and gifts were also given to all helpers. Obituary RAYMONDJAMESBRUCE Raymond James Bruce, of Newtonville, Ontario, passed away in Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, on Tuesday, November 19, 1985, following a short illness. He was 86 years old. He was born at McArthur's Mills, the son of James and Lilly Bruce (nee Reeves). He. is survived by brothers and sisters, Dan, of Bancroft, George, of Denbigh, Roy, of McArthur's Mills, Wendal, of Bancroft, Annie Jenkins, of L'Amable, Gladys Smith, of McArthur's Mills, Mabel Stewart, of McArthur's Mills; and Myrtle Barker, of McArthur's Mills. He was educated at McArthur's Mills, and was a member of Newtonville United Church. He resided for sixty years in Newtonville and Kendal. He married Eva MacMillan, who predeceased him. Later he married Rose Chatterton, who had also predeceased him. Left to mourn is his daughter, Isabelle Watters, of Bowmanville, and four grandchildren, grandchildren, Bruce, Bill, Linda and Dale and five great grandchildren. grandchildren. Rested at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 20, the funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22,1985, in Wiggins Funeral Home, Bancroft, with the Rev. Peter Tink officiating. Pallbearers were all nephews: Dennis Bruce, Ernie Bruce, Morris Bruce, Clarence Bruce, Ken Bruce and Steve Bruce.
