The presentation was made last week at Strathaven by the representatives of the Newtonville Brownies. Toros Down Pickering It was a quiet week for the Dennis Pizza Novice Toros as they played just one game. On Wednesday, Nov. 27, the Toros travelled to Pickering Village to tangle with the local boys in a regular season game. The Toros were on- top of their game this day and skated away with an 11 -1 victory. Leading the way for the Toros was Mike Nesbitt who scored three goals, close behind was Ryan Robinson, Paul Guff and Jeff Murphy who each scored a pair, while Gary Adams and David Watt followed up with single tallies. Mike DeBlois, Ian Taggart, Chad Veinot, Jason Hoffman, Alan McCullough, as well as the goal scorer all received assists on the goals as the Toros showed their superior play and skating ability. The week ended with a vigorous two-hour practice on Saturday in anticipation of a difficult match this coming Saturday against Port Hope. Good luck boys! Mr. and Mrs. Ross Wannan and family, Belleville, were weekend guests of his mother, Mrs. Doris Wannan. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Gray and Mrs. Francis Sutton attended the 90th birthday party of Mrs. Sutton's sister-in-law, Mrs. Bella Elford, held at the home of Mrs. Elford's son, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Elford, Toronto. (A note of interest - This Mrs. Elford is grandmother of Roan Elford, Sask. who has friends here in Orono U.C.W. who help sponsor him and his family, in their mission work.) This weather is certainly strange, as at the time of writing, a bad thunderstorm and torrents of rain! An old saying used to predict an open winter if thunderstorms this late in the fall. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Yeo who recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last Thursday, Nov. 28, with a family dinner party held in "Krebs", Whitby. The bride's sister, Miss Ruby Colwill, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, attended and was bridesmaid bridesmaid at the original wedding. Golden Wedding Celebration A very memorable event took place on Saturday, Nov. 30, in Orono United Church main hall, when over 250 friends, relatives and neighbors neighbors of Carlos and Mary Tamblyn gathered to give them best wishes for their golden wedding anniversary and renew old times. The head table looked lovely with a beautifully decorated wedding cake, made and decorated by Mrs. Doreen Lake. The happy couple received many gifts, cards and pretty ■ floral arrangements. arrangements. Special greetings were sent by Jeanne Sauve, the Governor-General, Prime Minister Mulroney, Premier Peterson, Mayor Garnet Rickard and Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. An excellent pictorial display drew much attention from all present, of Mary and Carlos life through the fifty years. The very delicious afternoon tea was served by members of Mary's unit No. 1 and the dinner party served to 36 family and immediate friends in the evening was catered to by members of unit no. 4. Music and cards were enjoyed by all present throughout the evening. Toasts to the bride and groom of fifty years and mâny happy memories shared by all present. Guests were present from Leamington, Guelph, Rockwood, St. Catharines, Oshawa, Port Hope, Lindsay, Bowmanville and Bethany. Horticulture Christmas Party An excellent crowd was in attendance at the Annual Christmas Show and evening, on Thursday, Nov. 28, in Orono United Church hall. And this, despite the town hall Christmas celebrations, the same evening. The hall was prettily decorated with trees and arrangements and of course, the show. One of the highlights of the show was the very cute entry of Donna Hutton, this class was entitled "Sleigh Bells Ringing" a design using a sleigh! Donna's imagination was sure evident with a sleigh full of the cutest teddy bears, all dolled up! Another class that drew attention was the "Crafty Creation Special" calling for a recycled gift for a gardener friend. These items were then later given out as draw prizes, We would especially like to thank Mrs. Yvonne Maitland, Apple Blossom Shop, for her generous donation of tulip bulbs for draw prizes. The president, 0. Challice, welcomed the crowd and following the singing of "0 Canada", called on James and Dorothy Lowery and Carlos Tamblyn to bring some lively Christmas music early in the evening, as they were also appearing at the town hall. The Jr. leaders, Yvonne Maitland and Yvonne Trafford gave out the junior gardeners prize monies and, special awards. The prize winners of most points through the year were Miss Dannielle Borremans for junior departments and Andrea Trafford for the senior departments. The winners were presented with the new 1985 O.H.A. service crest, donated by Isabelle Challice, district director. We have really appreciated the leadership leadership of Mrs. Trafford and Mrs. Maitland through the year and previous years as well. We hope to find two new junior leaders for our organization in early 1966. Following the business period, the president congratulated congratulated Miss Jessica Mostert for being nominated for Citizen of the Year, and Carlos and Mary Tamblyn, who celebrated celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on Saturday, Nov. 30. The guest for the evening was introduced by her mother (who else would know her better?) Mrs. Donna Sutherland, Sutherland, Bowmanville, who capably demonstrated the art of designing your own Christmas decorations. A very lovely hall table arrangement of evergreens, peacock feathers, red carnations, etc., received much attention. Another interesting design "An Apple Tree" using real apples, mistletow, etc. and Donna explained this item originated in Williamsburg, Penn., in the early 1800's and all homes displayed one. Donna's final item, a pretty dining table arrangement, was given as a lucky draw, and won by one of our new members this year, Mrs. Marjorie Garrett. With Miss Jessica Mostert at the piano, the crowd enjoyed enjoyed singing Christmas carols and Mrs. Corrie BeJenge and Mrs. Adele McGill gave out the prize winners for the evening. Mr. Merlin Slute, Bowmanville, gave out some helpful hints and acted as the judge for the show. Special prize winners as follows - Best Arrangement in show - Mrs. Corrie DeJong. Judges Choice - The "1986" Year Book Cover, designed by Miss Jessica Mostert. Most Points in Decorative - Mrs. Minnie Zegers. Most Points in Entire Show - Mrs. Yvonne Trafford and also Mrs. Trafford for most points in the year for "Crafty Creations." A very pretty as well as tasty lunch was served by the committees, Mrs. Marg Gunter, Mrs. Joan Hodge and Mrs. Nellie Baird. We were very happy to have several carloads from Newcastle present, and their annual pot- luck dinner and meeting is this week. Town Hall Card Party A good attendance was at the regular card party last Wednesday, Nov. 27 in the Town Hall, with the following winners - Bernice Partner 82, Alex Moffat 78, Hilda Caswell 77, Doreen Green 74, Reg. Elliot 74. Low score winner - Myrtle Alldread. Lucky draw winners - Edith Gordon, Grace Coatham. The next card party is Dec. 11th, Wednesday. Orono United Church News The Call to Worship for regular Sunday morning services was taken by Miss Cathy Milnes on behalf of Orono Sunday School. This special White Gift servee was written by David and Ruth Gray and presented by the entire Sunday school. Lighting of the first Advent Candle was performed by members of the Explorer groups along with their leader, Mrs. Marlene Ross. The story of the "White Gift" was dramatically presented by the children, many in delightful costumes. The little ones as little lambs, donkeys, doves, etc. were a real treat to see! The congregation sang many carols throughout the service and the Three Kings and shepherds all added greatly to the Christmas Story. The Primary department sponsored the "Little Drummer Boy" and a steady drum beat come down the aisle, with Craig Bull on the drums. The story of the "White Gifts" was described by two pretty little angels, played by Carla Werry and Jaime Luke, and two young men, played by Aaron Staples and Michael Doty. A special thank you to Mrs. Pamela Werry, Superintendent Superintendent of S.S., Mrs. Grace Coatham, all teachers and to Mrs. Marion Milnes for helping helping with music. This was a very inspirational service and much enjoyed by all present. A special thank you from Mrs. Vicky Hardy for prayers, phone calls and cards. Her many friends hope for a speedy recovery. Orono News The downtown business men's association sponsored their first "Christmas Lighting Lighting Celebration" last Thursday, Nov. 28 in the Orono Town Hall. The school children presented Christmas carols on the front steps and were much enjoyed by everyone everyone present. Several groups of local musicians rendered excellent music inside and hot cider and cookies were served to all. This was termed a very successful "first" for the D.B.A. Be sure to pay our friendly village a visit real soon and especially in the evening, when the stores have all their Christmas lights turned on! Have heard many complimentary complimentary remarks of how attractive the store windows are and can fully agree.
